I am getting ready for rifle season and i never hunt in my local area I've always hunted in mo and I'm going to try it around here its a lot close and i way used my 30-06 there and I've always hunted in field and now ill be hunting in woods and I'm just wondering how my 30-06 would do its a Winchester model 70. I'm using 180 soft point

I'd go for a low power optic. You won't be under gunned, but you might be shooting closer than you would overlooking a field.

Remember that the heaviest bullet can be deflected by a leaf or a twig.

As long as you don't use a ballistic tip you should have no problems. That is the same setup I use hunting deer here in Northern Minnesota and I've yet to experience any issues with the cartridge doing it's job if I do mine.

Shot my latest deer in January at about 60 yards back in the woods, with a .30-06. Sierra 150 gr. Game King. Scope was down to around 3X

Its is sighted in at 50 yds in mo where I've hunted most shot are around 50 yrds so i sould be ok there. i have a 243 that is dead on at 50 yrds how would it do. I have a 7.62x54r in. M44 carbine it is shorter but its a lot heavier but it not fire chambering right so its out for now thanks

I have to ask... why are you sighted in at 50 yds? If you were zeroed in at 100 yds and a deer popped out at 50 yds youd only be off center 1/4 of an inch with a 30-06. Im sorry, i just had to ask the advantage of a 50 yrd zero.

I guess it depends on the woods we're talking about. Here in the foothills of SC I soon grew tired of schlepping around a model 70 featherweight 243.
Switched to an RSI in 308.... Much better in the woods.... The woods I found myself in most of the time.
That said, a 30-06 is fine.

I'm in river bottom in west tn around the Mississippi river. i know my 30-06 has the power i just wanted to be sure. my scope is on 4 i think thanks

Your 30-06/180SP will punch though most anything except telephone poles to kill anything on this continent at those ranges.
(And I wouldn't even count on those telephone poles protecting you were you on the muzzle end.)
4x scope is fine -- to include chipmunks if you have a mind and don't feel overgunned. ;)

A Winchester featherweight is heavy? A Winchester model 70 30-06 is a questionable woods gun? Rifles being dailed in at 50 yards? Ive slipped into the twilight zone.
Where did I say a featherweight was heavy?

The OP asked a question.... Others have tried to be helpful.... Have you?

A 30-06 with 180 gr. bullets will kill anything in North America with no problem. Like most others for close in woods hunting I normally will leave a scope set at the lowest power, sometimes a 2-7 sometimes a 3-9. I do have one 30-06 with a fixed 6x however and it works just fine as well.

I have to ask... why are you sighted in at 50 yds? If you were zeroed in at 100 yds and a deer popped out at 50 yds youd only be off center 1/4 of an inch with a 30-06. Im sorry, i just had to ask the advantage of a 50 yrd zero.
In 30-06 if you are zeroed at 50 yards, you are nearly identically zeroed at 200. It gives you a maximum point blank range of about 350 yards. Aim for the center of the vitals anywhere in that MPBR and you will hit the vitals.

You're good to go in the woods or anywhere else. My family hunts deer in a mix of woods and thickets with some open areas and some swamp. The 06/180 core lokts have been getting it done for three generations of farmers and hunters. Remington slide action, couple bolt guns, couple BARs - put that core lokt in the right place and they go down. Most scopes are 3 - 9x.

Only thing you'll want to remember is to dial the scope down after sighting in.

I just never heard of a rifle dialed in at 50yds....
Assuming a scope mounted 1.5 inches above bore centerline -- and zeroed at 25 yards -- the 180 CoreLok starting at 2,750fps will be point-blank ±2½" all the way out to 250 yds.

Effectively battle-zeroed for all conceivable purposes...

Last year I got my 2 deer within 75 yards in wooded area with a 1903A3 Springfield's Iron Sights. On one of the shots I made I couldn't see that Buck's body, so I had to shoot through a bush, and guesstimate where his vitals would be. I nearly missed him, but ended up getting him through one lung, and his jugular. This year if it happens I'll know to aim further back.
