I have 16lbs. of WC846 that I bought, hoping to use for my M1, but I've since found out that it's NOT recommended for that! Good for .223/5.56 or .308/7.62x51, but not for .30-06 or for Garand loads. Burns too fast. Bummed me right out. But I've got enough .223 powder to last a long time now.

Mine came from Pat's Reloading, call them and ask about the WC846. http://www.patsreloading.com/patsrel/prices.aspx

Standard basic M2 ball load is a 150 gr. flat-base FMJ bullet over 47 gr. of IMR 4895. I'd stick with similar recipes.

I have to disagree with you, WC846 is very similar to BL-C(2) and W748 and both can be used in the M1. You might be thinking of WC844 being too fast a powder. WC846 is a slower powder than IMR4895, not faster...

WC844 is used in the 5.56mm NATO round and WC846 is used in the 7.62mm NATO round. WC846 is the powder used in the M14 ammo. That said, it's probably not the very best choice but it can be safely used with success. Like you said 4895 is probably the best choice along with IMR4064.

To the OP, when loading WC846 use starting load data from BL-C(2) and work up the the desired velocity looking for pressure signs.

Probably be good to snoop around CMP Forum for this type of stuff too. The powder is very similar to Winchester 748. I've had fits getting 748 to work in 06 for the Garand and other rifles. Definitely use mag primers. Others seem to have been able to make it work fine (748) and love it.

Snapshot here on some info

Yes...I am working up loads with 846. The last two loads I have worked up have given these results..all at 100 yards - supported and from a bench.
Groups have been mediocre at best so far.

46 gr WC846 - 168gr SMK COAL 3.30 - Avg. velocity 2508 (10 shots) - Extreme Spread 128 - Standard deviation 45.85 (high 2604 fps - Low 2476)

45.8 gr WC846 168 gr SMK 3.30 COAL - Avg. velocity 2490 (10 shots) - Extreme Spread 140 - Standard Deviation 50.93 (high was 2583 fps - low 2443)

So far I am having better luck with IMR4895...but I have more combinations to try. Hope this helps.
By the way...I guess you know WC846 is similar to BL-C(2). Emphasis is on the similar to..they're not exactly the same so caution is in order working up your loads.

Thanks Unclenick

I had good luck with Winchester 760 using Winchester Magnum primers. I kept the charge at the minimum. Unfortunately I don't have my notes anymore as they were lost years ago.

If you're using CCI#34 primers which are NATO rated and work very well in the M1 Garand you don't need to use a Magnum primer because the CCI#34 primers are magnum strength primers...

Wc846

I find the batch of WC846 that I have is just a little hotter than BLC-2 but very close. I use it just fine in 223, 308 and 30-06.
