30-06 or 270

I am a fan of both, have owned both, although only have the 30-06 out of the two today! Although I also own a .308 so go figure! No other reason but I want one is needed. Very little difference in performance until you go up to 180 or higher in the 30-06. But again I happen to think the 06 is THE all American round, and everyone should have one!

Go buy it, you REALLY need it! Feel better now?:D

I own and love athe 30-06 125-150 grns for deer and can climb way up there in wt for elk. Buy it IMHO the most versatile round ever made!:neener:

I love you guys. Your opinions are priceless. I own 338win mag and a 22-250. I am truly looking for an excuse to buy a rifle I don't really need, but still want. I have rifles that will kill everything I'll ever want to persue. I don't have that particular caliber, but feel it's mandatory to have a good old 30-06 to round out the safe. I have owned several and had great luck with every version I've tried. I've owned remington and tikka's that were both phenominal shooters. I have recently looked into the ballistics of the 308 and they are so close to the 30-06 it's hardly worth discussing. I'm thinking of going that route just to do something different.

Sounds like you're already covered over the gun spectrum. If you want an 06' then buy one. Everyone should have one in their safe. Ever thought about an M1 Garand?

I am thinking about a full custom tactical R700 in 30-06, just because I've never ever seen a "tactical" 30-06 (well, besides the 1903 Springfield), I've only seen em' with those ugly high gloss wood stocks with those little toothpick barrels, I wish Remington would make a heavy barreled M700 in 30-06.

Or a Surgeon action or a G30 CRF action from McMillian.

I have a .270 and love it and see no need to have an 06 in my opinion. The only advantage I see would be the 200 or 220gr bullets.

I guess I am bias on this as I own both a 760 30-06 pump and a 7600 270 pump. The 7600 is scoped for desert hunting and the '06 is iron sighted for tight forest hunting, mainly elk. Any excuse is a good excuse to add another gun to the cabinet even if the excuse is "the little lady was mad at me today".

I don't engage in the .270/.30-06 "controversy". In all honesty, all the debate has done is sell more gun rags and piss off cranky old FUDDS.

Both will cleanly kill everything most hunters will ever harvest. However, the .30-06 does have the advantage of a larger bullet selection in factory and handloaded ammo.

Then again, the .270 makes things simpler: 130's for deer, 150's for everything else. 150 Partitions for Elk. 'Nuff said.

I also had the same dilema buying a model 70 30-06 when I had two perfectly good .270 rifles, but had the itch. Have a pre-64 30-06 from 1949 or so that I did not care to shoot anymore, so bought a stainless model 70 '06 and two months later won a model 70 300 Win mag. Figured the two were pretty close, rebarreled the 06 to 338-06 with a fluted 20 inch barrel for brush and blind hunting, 10 years ago and could not be in much better shape for hunting big game.
