I am going to start reloading for my 30-06 TC Encore. I was checking out which powders to use in my Nolser 6 reloading guide and what was available at my lgs.

They arecommended using H4350 as a powder to start with for the 30-06 using 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips.

My Question is this a good powder for a beginner to use for the 30-06 or is there a better powder to use?

Check several loading manuals. All offer several powder choices. They have already done the hard work of testing. Use their expertice...they have been doing this for many years. :D

58-59grns (max load work up) of h4350, under a 165 of any flavor is hard to beat. Ive used that load in 4 06s now and its been at most an MOA load.

Ive also be liking the superformance powder from hodgdon, uses a couple grains more to get very similar performance, but it meters great.

The other 4350, and 4831s all deserve some consideration as well, ive only used the IMR variants but they have produced good results also...h4350 has been cheaper which is why ive stuck with it.

I use 56gr of H4350 in my 06, not the highest speed load but they group VERY well in my Savage, much better then the max loads did. Ballistic tips are a great bullet, I use them extensivly for deer, I could not dream of a better performer on CXP2 class game, they have always given me through and through performance in every caliber I load for.

i've settled on imr4350 for both my 06' and 270 win. lots of options out there. try some different powder/bullet combos and your rifle will tell you which it prefers. good luck

4350 is a good choice. One of the 4895's or Varget would be another, they all seem to be good performers with a wide variety of bullet weights in the large case non-magnums.

My rifle 30-06 likes IMR4350 so that's what I use. Tried H414 and groups grew big time so I stuck with what works. That's just my rifle, yours will have its own favorite powder

H-4350 is one of the best you can use. I'm getting great velocity and accuracy with that powder in my 30-06 rifles. My 22" barreled rifle is getting 3090 fps with 150's and a max load, 180 gr bullets are getting 2850, all with sub MOA accuracy. If I back off about .5-1 gr I'm losing about 50 fps, but keeping all shots in the .3-.6" range.

Have not tried it, but I'm hearing that the Ramshot Hunter and Big Game powders are even better. I've tried some of the Ramshot Tac powder on my 308 with excellent results.

I'd certainly start with the H-4350. Look up some possible starting loads here.

One thing about the old '06: It doesn't really seem to care what you feed it. I've always been able to fiddle around and find a sub-MOA load. I've mostly used 3031 for 110-grain bullets and 4064 for 150s and 165s. H414 worked well for me with 180-grain bullets. My father did equally well with 4895; all he ever shot was the Hornady 150-grain spire point.

Mine never seemed to care whether I used Remington or Winchester primers. In the latter, "large rifle" or "large rifle and magnum" performed the same.

I've done equally well for groups with Remington Bronze Points, Hornady spire points and most all the Sierras. I settled on the last because they come in a prettier box. :D

My experience has been similar to Art's. I've used mostly IMR powders incl. 4831, 4350, 4064, 3031, etc. I've used CCI, Winchester and RWS primers along with Sierra, Hornady and Speer bullets and I've had good luck with all of them.

The .30-06 is probably the least finicky cartridge I have loaded for.

Another vote for IMR4350 (bought a keg) as it works well in '06 and 243/6mm.

I started with IMR 4350 and H414. Both seem to do well in my Remmy 700, mostly load 150 or 165 grain core-loc

I use H4350 and H335 in my .30-06 loads. Mine use 180gr bullets. Both powders seem to work well. I mainly use the H335 because that's what I use for my .223Rem so it kind of makes it easier if I can just buy one or two powders in bulk and use it for everything.
