I've got a bunch of Hornady's 150gr spire points and IMR-4198 and I'd like to build a "reduced" load for 30-06. My older IMR manual shows up to 38gr of IMR-4198 with a 150gr bullet but I've seen data somewhere that shows 36gr as max? Quickload predicts about 2390fps with 35.0gr which sounds like a fun 30-30 equivalent load.

Has anyone had any luck with this combination?

Since Hornady doesn't label any of their bullets as a "spire point" which bullet are you actually using? I'm assuming that you're talking about the 150gr Interlock SP?

Yes, their spitzer bullet- not their round nose. I guess they don't call them "Spire Points" anymore.

Yeah, I had to look up their definitions in the reloading manual to even see a reference to the Spire Points. Please don't be offended, I'm almost 60 years old and remember them too, I was just trying to be clear about which bullet you were talking about.

Unfortunately I've never used that cartridge combination so I haven't got any first hand knowledge about it but I don't see any problems with it other than the low fill volume that you'd have. My personal concern would be that the flame front might be able to jump forward and ignite all of the powder at once rather than burning steadily from back to front. If that did happen then you'd get a pretty bad pressure spike that might be dangerous. Mind you, that's just a guess on my part and might not even be possible but that's my concern with low powder charge volumes.

Hornady doesn't call them spire points any more? Hadn't noticed.
I never tried 4198 in the '06, but the old IMR data worked ok in the 308 with 125 gr bullets.
Speer shows 30/06 4198 loads down to 24 gr with a 180 gr bullet, and 25 gr with a 130, so there's plenty of room to work up a load.

The only powder I have used for light loads in the 30-06 with a jacketed bullet were made with H4895. If you have a lot of 4198 to use up I see no reason why you can't try that combination. That is a bit too fast a powder for my liking though.

Well, I shoot those same Hornady 150 grain interlocks over 51 grains of the discontinued 4007SSC and it chrono'd out of my Model 70 at 2600 fps.

I like it as the recoil isn't as still and it's generally a through and through broadside shot with good expansion.

Some criticism came my way for downloading to 30-30 velocities, but it meets my needs just fine. Right around 1 MOA as well.

Hope that helps.

No offense taken, Macgrumpy.

I was given 500 of the Hornady 150 spitzer's and almost 8lbs of IMR-4198. I normally use 4895 or 4064 in my '06 but thought the 150s over 4198 would a fun load and I don't have any other use for the 4198 beyond cast bullets in my 30-30.

I wish I could find a thread where someone talked about an old American Rifleman article mentioning 4198 for reduced loads in the '06
