I see sub $250 sporterized military guns in 30-06 and 8mm fairly often. My dedicated deer rifle is this sporterized FN 1950 Mauser in 30-06. Paid $200 for the rifle and $300 for the scope.
Looked at the Tikka? I was searching for a 30-06 a few months back and finally settled on a tikka t3 lite stainless with a synthetic stock.
The gun has a crisp trigger and very smooth bolt and very accurate. It's also light and since its stainless I'm not worried about it when hunting in wet conditions.
There are lots of good choices for the application you mention. The one you're thinking about is undoubtedly a good choice.
Savage has the reputation of having the best out of box accuracy, among the people I generally hear from.
30-06 is a splendid round. 308 is just the same cartridge, with a shorter case, operated at higher pressure, for very close to the same muzzle velocity. Either will do fine. The 30-06 gives you just a bit more "reach".
Just my own bias: The 30-06 and the 308 are both fun to shoot for the first few shots. But most people quit having fun after the first 15-20 shots. So you won't take either to the range a lot, to just shoot for fun. Also, both cartridges are more powerful than you need for 95% of the available hunting in North America. If you plan to use the rifle for fun trips to the range, you might think about the Savage Axis in 7mm-08. It has plenty of range and punch, and you'll enjoy trips to the range a lot more.
I've seen a couple of scoped Axis rifles on the local ads for $275-325.
If you haven't bought one yet, I noticed that CDNN has Howa 1500 (ie Weatherby Vanguard) in 30-06 camo synthetic stock for like $369 Great rifle, great value.
I just bought the Ruger American in 30-06...I had a Ruger M77 in 30-06 for over 20 years and a buddy of mine shot his first pug with it and wanted the rifle...Should have never sold that rifle, but hey he was a good friend.
Has anyone shot this? What do you think of this rifle. Great info on .30-06 vs .308. I sounds like from a versatility standpoint .30-06 wins. Sorry, haven't been checking my post. Too much into the Thunder right now.
Thunder Up!
I will be back though. Please continue posting.
