Never shot long range with an ought 6 but I know people who have and the rifles shot very well at long ranges, they hand loaded their rounds though. The furthest I have seen was a target shot at 800 yards with one. The person got a 4.625 inch group. They had a sightron 6.5-20x50 mil dot. I'm probably going to get that same scope for my 30-06. When I got to shoot their rifle, we were shooting at 175 yards. I saw bullet holes at that range more clear with that scope on 20 mag than with a 32 mag spotting scope.

For most shooters it is a wash. Any inherent accuracy the .308 has over the .30-06 the extra velocity of the '06 will make up for in slightly less wind drift. As you get better this may not be as true but certainly for many of us it will never make a difference. If you are looking for match ammo try out federal gold medal match.

The only advantage the 30-06 has over the .308 is with 190 and 200 grain bullets, which I don't shoot anyway. I top out at 180 grains, the .308 is close to the '06, even in that weight. The vast majority of my loads, use the Sierra 168 gr SMK.
