Neither. If I'm gonna go after a half-ton predator with 5 inch claws, I'll take my Marlin 1895 .45-70 shooting 500 gr. hardcasts or my .375 Ultra with 300 gr. spitzers.

I now own a Win M70 EW in .30-06 and another in 7mm Rem Mag. I love both calibers and I love the new FNH Winnies. Importantly, I also own a Rem 700 XCR II in .375 H&H. If I seriously thought I might encounter a somewhat antisocial bear, Brown or just a cinnamon Blackie, I'd be toting my .375 stoked with my handloads of 69.0 gr of RL 15 under a 260gr Nosler AccuBond. Actually, either a 7mm RM or a .30-06 is just fine for a Black bear (of any shade) and will kill a Brown bruin. However, I wouldn't want to have to stop a charge with the fast 7 or the -06. YMMV.

Buy the 700 in 7mag,

then have it re-barreled for 338 win mag, use 225-250 grain premium bullets and cut the barrel down to 22".

I have a 742 Woodmaster in 30-06, it is a deer rifle. Not a rifle I would bet my life on.

The question is not what will kill a bear.... it is what will stop a bear.
