No big surprise here. This is just my personal opinion, but I'd be willing to bet decent money that if you could take a survey of every deer killed in North America in the last 8 decades or so, you'd find the .30-30 in the top three as far as the cartridge that did the killin'. I don't think it's ever been the dominant choice for deer hunters, but it's remained consistently popular while others (.35 Whelen, .30-06, .270, .45/70) have gone up and down over the years.
