I just got back from the range, shooting the new LEVERevolution, CoreLokt, and fusion cartridges in 30-30. Using an almost new Model 94 with 24" barrel. No scope, factory iron sites only.

I was very impressed with the new Hornaday ammo. For me it was more consistent by far at 50, 100 & 150 yds. My eyes aren't good enough to shoot beyond that! If the downrange impact is all Hornaday says it is, this is going to be fun.

I hope some really good shooters with scopes will give us all a report.

is it a soft rubbery tip? i read about that ammo where they actually dropped the guns from ladders trying to initiate the ammunition going off inside the gun.

Hornady's new lever ammo

I compared to Remington corelokt 170g recently,I was shooting Marlin 336SC /1949 with factory sights. I was extremely impressed, groups tightened significantly and it shot much flatter. I zeroed it at 2.25 + at 100 yds (had to move rear elavator into last slot ) , dead on at 200yds and shot it out to 300 yds .
I only had one box of it and want to shoot more but it is quite impressive. Between the bullet and their powder I think they have something special for the 30/30. I preceived more recoil from the Hornday but still not unpleasant. I don't think the ammo or the caliber will be the limiting factor to shooting it out to 300yds . This is coming from a reloader of a couple of decades who has shot very little factory loaded ammo and will be buying the bullet only as quickly as available . The above is my very limited comparision and was ammo I happened to have . I think it adds versitility to the 30/30.

If this ammo is as good as I'm hearing, my old .308 will rarely leave the rack. 30-30 has been my favorite for long hunts into the mountains for many years.

You know, I mentioned the concept 20 years ago to my best friend's father (a gunsmith, dealer, all around gunnie).

"Why don't they just put a pointy rubber tip on the .30-30? That way the tip wouldn't have to be blunt and it wouldn't get all mangled when you loaded the tube."

His reply: "Yeah, I had that same idea when I was your age. I've been waiting for someone to make something like that."

It's great to see someone finally putting this good, old idea into practice.

mosbourn,

How was recoil with the Leverevolution compared to conventional factory ammunition? Did you notice any difference? I have a short stocked HEF HandiRifle in .30-30 and that might be a good load for new recoil shy hunters.

I read somewhere that someone said it had stouter recoil. I don't doubt it with the faster velocity it is generating.

Yes, there is somewhat more recoil than a regular load. I shot 40 rounds this weekend on the bench out of my Win 94. I have a small bruise on my shoulder. No recoil pad. Standing up though, its no problem.

I'm beginning to regret purchasing my .30-'06 instead of the .30-30 that I really wanted. I just figured that the .30-'06 would be a lot more flexible for hunting. Now I'd rather have a lighter, more compact rifle, since I'm new to big game and sure won't be taking any shots over 300 yards anyway.

But how does the new ammo perform in a run-of-the-mill 20" gun like a Marlin 336?

i have been wondering the same thing i have a marlin 336 and it shots winchester power points but doest group well but winchester silver tip it loves and around here the silver tips are a little over $11 a box while the new loever evoution is 18.99 in the next town over my town doesnt even carry them i would like to get one box to try but not going to stick with the m it looks like silver tips to me any one else used winchester silver tips or power points with much luck?

I haven't seen any of that "Leverevolution" ammo yet, but I'm gonna try some when I can get it.

Of the currently available factory stuff I have tried, my Marlin likes the Rem 170-Gr the best.

My only (and I mean only) concern with the ammo is about the bullet tips becoming permanently deformed when the gun is kept loaded. I may get a box, load the tube and leave it for a month or so and see what happens. I have a few leverguns and one or two stay loaded.

Has anyone tried this?

I was comparing the ballistics to Winchester Power Point Plus (I think now discontinued, basically a 150 gr. powerpoint bullet with a baked on coating pushed to 2480 fps) and the Leverevolution still beats it at any range.

I would love to try it out.

Sorry All,
I haven't looked back at this post for awhile. I bought my catridges from Midway. I did not notice any difference in recoil between the CorLockt 150gr., fusion 150gr. or the leverevelution 160gr.. The major difference was consistent accuracy.

They say that the tips can be compressed forever and will always go "back to shape", and they're not effected by extreme cold either. The tips feel more like hard plastic than rubber.
