30/30 not enough?

If a fellow reloads you can make your .30-30 even more versatile. I have a cast bullet load that I make up that I can shoot 50-100+ rounds at a session and not have a sore shoulder good for plinking and even for small game like rabbits and squirrel. Cheap to reload, cheap to shoot, fun as anything out there. And it is practically Un-American not to own at least one levergun chambered in .30-30.
;)

My grandfather once asserted to me-- and I think he's right-- that there's probably been more deer killed with a 30-30 than any other caliber in U.S. History. And this was from a guy that didn't own a 30-30.

On a thread here a bit back, I think a poster also got it right...

It seems that every generation determines that a more powerful cartridge is needed to kill the same mid-sized deer. Where a 30-30 seemed to do fine in one generation, the next needed a 30-06 MININUM to take the same animal. The next needs some sort of magnum caliber.

Pretty soon, I'll be sellling Mossy Oak Print spatulas for people to go retrieve their game from off the sides of trees.

Suprisingly, the trend seems to be in opposite around here. More and more of our traditional "Gotta Have a 30-06 Hunters" are exploring other calibers on some limited basis. I'm seeing a LOT more .243 Winchester in hunter's hands these days around here. A friend of mine's young daughter did GREAT this past season using a .223 bolt action with 90 grain bullets.

You are going to have a lot more opportunity hunting out there to take longer shots - like 300 yards. The deer will also be able to see you coming and this will make it much more difficult to get closer

I can't fault your advice really, but with a scope and leverevolution rounds, 300 yards is totally do-able. That round really does represent a quantum leap in terms of performance over the old soft-nose bullets. Not that the old soft nose rounds are horrible, they aren't, but the Leverevolution rounds really extend the useful range of the rifle.

By the way, if you buy a 336, there is a THR club for 336 owners:

The guy that started it, Nematocyst, is a pretty good guy to talk to and ask questions of.

Exalent choice have one in the closet right now perfect deer caliber. I really like there buckhorn sight on the back and fine sight in front great for shooting farther away.

I've got a bunch of hunting rifles, 30-06, .243, 7mm mag, .270. But I always hunt deer with my trusty 336. I just like the way it feels, and I figure if I can't get within 150 yards of a whitetail, I'm not much of a hunter.

Good choice for deer. Not for elk, though. That's what the 30-06 is for.

A .223? On a deer? Old Wotan and Mother Mary, what kind of abomination is that? Haven't you read on the internet that .223 is much to worthless a round to kill man or deer? For shame, John, for shame.....

.30-30, Winchester or Marlin with the Williams 'Fire' sights and Hornady LeverEvolution ammo--------GREAT OUTFIT!!!!!!!
Mine is a Winchester with all the above plus sling and 'butt cuff'. I added a recoil pad to increase the length of pull and sold everything else.
.30-30 rifle and my S&W .44M Mountain Gun handles everything I need.

Go and get yourself some nice cantaloupes. Place it on the 100 yard mark and load up your favorite deer hunting load. Shoot the cantaloupes. Then and only then let someone try to tell you that the 30-30 is underpowered for deer. Get one. Reload for it and have a lot of fun. They will never go out of style. They are like 1911 45 ACP pistols. They will be around forever. Wait, just wait someone will think that they have an outdated model 94 and when they do just relieve them of that extra dead safe queen they have.

the marlin 336 is a great gun. In my area, factory camo sling and scope will cost you about 525 last time i checked.

ALthough id rather upgrade and get a 35 remington chambered one just for the extra bullet weight.
