Bushnell 1.5 X 4.5 Banner "Dusk & Dawn"....perfect for a Marlin, if that is the way you want to go.

XS Sight Systems Ghost Ring is the "proper" sighting system for a lever gun.

And then you have the "ugly" but it works great system:

For a scope on a 30-30, it's hard to beat a fixed 4 x 32. In a variable, I don't like to go bigger than a 2-7 x 32.

My winchester has a williams fp on it. I have a marble's tang sight on a savage 99, and that is nice, too. If I were to scope the winchester, it would be with a fixed 2-4x, in a 30ish or smaller objective lens configuration.
If you go much bigger, you will have to use higher rings, and that will take your face off the stock. Buy the clearest, brightest scope you can afford.

Even though mine shoots great with the standard sights, I can't resist tinikering...

I bought a cheap red dot sight and stuck it on, and really like it. No magnification, but it's fine for the Marlin, and gives fast acquisition.

Now I've got the start of my very own CAR (Cowboy Assault Rifle). My next step will be a sling and then I think I'll stop. If I figure out a way to mount a flashlight and a bayonet, I'll just save everyone the trouble and kick my own a@@.

Since my 50+ year-old tri-focused eyes need lots of help, my Marlin wears a 4x32 scope....Tasco, IIRC
