I was wondering if anyone who has the latest Hornady Reloading Manual 9th edition could give me one load reference. I have a bunch of other books, but I have found a discrepancy that I am trying to clear up.

I am looking for the max load and associated velocity for the following combination:
150grn #3035 Round Nose for the 30-30 Winchester using WIN 748 powder.

Thank in advance.

30-30 150gr RN #3035 COAL 2.550"
Starting Load: 32.0gr W748 1900 fps
Max Load: 38.9gr W748 2300 fps

That looks like the same data as a previous Hornady Manual. The max load is heavier than the Hodgdon site at 34.5 grns, but the listed velocities are lower than both the Hodgdon site and my chronograph readings.

In my Marlin 336 I am seeing hardly any flattening of the primer at 34.5grns, and achieving around 2,380 fps. The Hornady factory rounds, American Whitetails, with that bullet are hitting about 2,550 fps (much higher than their advertised 2,390 fps) with noticeably more recoil. Disassembly of one of the factory rounds I found 37.5 grains of a ball powder. The primers in the factory round are slightly flatter, but absolutely nothing of concern. No other signs of excess pressure such as hard extraction.

This data makes me feel better using the max Hodgdon load in my lever gun.

Thanks for this info.

I use a magnum primer with WIN748 when used in a 30-30 to ensure consistent ignition of a ball powder in typical Winter hunting conditions.

Anyone else do this?

In your Marlin 336's with Micro-groove rifling, you will see less pressure signs than with rifles using Ballard style rifling.
