folks i am wanting to try this combo,, 30 -40kr w/ leverevolution 160g, and leverevolution powder, thought i would start with a 30-30 load and go from there any thoughts?

What gun are you shooting, most Krags don't have tube mags so there's no reason not to use regular pointed bullets. A krag is gonna be capable of over driving that bullet a little and possibly under penatrate. If you just want to try something just to see how the shoot I see no problems.

Easy fix, switch to 170gr Partitions of a TSX if you want to push the speeds a little. You won't have under penetration issues until you hit Africa. They are good for a solid 3 feet pf penetration from low end 30-30 speeds up to full bore 30-06 speeds easy. Cannot speak for the leverevolution stuff I have never used it.

30-30 or 308mx bullet? The long jump didn't make any difference using 30-30 in 308mx. It's a bolt gun so you can load longer and not crimp the 30-30 rnd. I had some trouble with split necks when using short bullets in 30-30 case until I started sizing the neck only back to the base of the bullet. Unsupported neck would split behind the bullet base.

went to 40.7g powder,, seated to crimp ring,, feeds good, but col is very short for 30-40

but 2217 at 5' off muzzle 1.75 group (5 shot) @ 100y guess i bitched too soon

Must be pretty close to a max load. 1/5 more capacity, 35C is max for 30-30. It's a slow powder, I use it for cast also.

thanks for all the input folks,, it helped, i was looking to find if all the "old" 30s in the family could be loaded with the same components ( realistically ) ,, i shoot the only 30-40kr in a host of 30 win. in winchester 94 & marlin 336,, it worked out well , again thanks for the help,,,, i think for day to day i will go back to 165g vld as standard use

tikka t3 in 6.5 x 55 is my "go to" rifle too
:D it does not get any better then a T3 in 6.5x55 that is one superb rifle cartridge combination. The Sweed in a modern action is the perfect caliber/power for CXP2 class game inside 300 yards and thanks to it's impressive ballistic efficiency it is still capable out to twice that distance, all in a light kicking easy to shoot package, personality wise it is alot like a slightly more efficient 270 Win with a preference for heavier bullets.

As always, a compromise is just that: it compromises something. If it's acceptable, fine, otherwise, reconsider. My final load for 30-40 jacketed bullets in my M96 cut-down Bannerman carbine with King's front & rear sights is a 180 gr RN or spitzer pushed by IMR or H4350. Superb accuracy and lower pressures for that old action sealed the deal. :scrutiny:
