I'm toying with the idea of getting a .308 or .30-06. Part of the appeal would be shooting reduced loads at 100 yards. Anyone know of a cast bullet load for either of these that will shoot to the same POA at 100 yards as a full-velocity jacketed hunting load at 250 or 300 yards? Assume a typical height scope mount for a 40 mm scope.

edit: Alternate question for someone more adept at using a ballistic calculator: to match a common 165 gr/BC 0.41 bullet (Nosler Partition) @ 2650 fps zeroed at 250 yards, what muzzle velocity would give a 150 gr BC 0.25 bullet the same launch angle to hit zero at 100 yards? The online calculator I use doesn't give the initial angle.

New load. Sight in again.
Cast loads won't have the same POI as a jacketed due to the vast difference in velocities. No frame of reference to compare either. .30 calibre cast loads tend to use shotgun or handgun powders and not typical rifle powders. Data I have gives a bit over 1400 fps to a bit over 1600 fps for 150 grain starting loads. About 1700 to a bit under 2000 fps max loads. Slowest jacketed runs around 2450 fps.
Think in terms of lighter jacketed bullets vs cast. 125, 130's etc. using regular powders.
The Point Of Aim won't necessarily change though.

I think you can get pretty close to what you want depending on where you zero. For typical 308/30-06 loads, it's about 2 minutes to go from 100 to 200yds
3 more to go from 200 to 300yds. So 5 min total.

My cast load (311291GC w/ 16grs of Alliant 2400) puts them in about 7" low at 100yds. So you'd be maybe 2" low at 100yds if you zero at 300yd with your jacketed load.

FWIW...

I toyed around with 150gr cast GC in my Garand, using various 4895 charges, per various tutorials.

37gr 4895 runs about 2100fps and mostly cycles my M1 and hits a 12" plate at 100 yards standing with no change to the sights over my usual FMJ load.

My 06 shoots nice groups W/150 gr. gc. lee (c309-150-f) H2O dropped WWs .35 gr. imr 4895.I use the same bullet in my 30-30 W/5.4 gr. 473AA just for fun plinking and shooting stuff.Due to barrle harmonics, any time you change your load you will have to adjust and re dial your sites or scope, but that's the fun of re-loading :)
