30 carbine

Hello folks. I will start reloading the 30 carbine. I will also beusin the H110. My question is the type of primer I should use. Shoud I buy the small pistol primer or small rifle primer? Thanks for your repsonses.

Small rifle mag primers
All the old books show mag primers --- I don't know about the newest books.
I have been using Mag primers with H110 for about 35 years in the 30 carbine--works good

That 30 carbine ammo sure ain't as cheap as it used to be.

Books recommend small rifle primers. This is because the primer cup is harder than small pistol primers. I have used CCI Small Pistol Magnum primers in .30 carbine with no problems, but if you gotta buy them you might as well get the small rifle primers.

Be sure to lube the cases before sizing them. They're NOT straight-walled and they WILL stick in your sizing die! This will cause you to make ugly noises.

Even with 30 carbine carbide dies, the die manufacturers recommend lubricating the cases.

Oh, not so bad.
There's still some places with good supplies of mil surplus ammo.
Quite a bit of good brass available.
Missouri Bullet sells a nice cast bullet just right for the carbine.
All ammunition is going up at staggering rates.
I think a lot of the cost is in the high metal prices among other things.
30 Carbine FMJ goes for 30 bucks a box around here, more than I want to pay.

Berry has a plated round nose for 30 Carbine. Rated for carbine velocities. Shoots well in my carbines.

The Lee Cast bullet 311-100-2R is a very good bullet to use in a carbine. Have shot thousands of these thru my carbine. I size them to .310.

I"ve loaded with SP mag's, SR and SR mag. They've all worked fine, but I feel best with a hard SR. the way the floating firing pin dents a chambered round just makes me a little leery of a soft primer.

my carbine chamber is a little sloppy, and I can get away with only resizing about half way down the case. I don't have to lube them that way and my case life *should* be a little longer. (but I lose them before they wear out) I've been shooting a lead 120grn hard cast bullet. works well. I use h110 and push them around 1450fps. no gas check. minimal leading, but I did plug the gas system a little and couldn't get the gas piston out by hand. Had to pull the nut and fire the gun to pop the piston free. Came right out, no fuss. Of course, I was in the woods, behind a tree, pulling the trigger with my shoe strings hoping the gun didn't explode. good times.
