Hey,

I was browsing on DealExtreme and came across a $17.50 (free shipped from Hong-Kong) rail-mount light with remote pressure switch:

I have handled 2-3 of these little Hong Kong lights, and they are the real deal as far as construction and brightness. Haven't tried this one (yet), but some testing with YOUR gun for reliability would obviously be in order. You could visit candlepowerforums for ideas on reinforcing the gluing etc if you were paranoid.

And here are some cheap self-mounting rails:

Hope this helps someone. I will probably throw this setup onto my Hi Point 995 when I get the desire to mess around with it. Let me know how it works out if anyone gets this setup.

I would go with a Sure Fire or Streamlight. They are well built and stand behind their product. I really haven't been brave enough to try a Chinese/Hong Kong knock-off. I have heard that Cree makes pretty decent tac. lights FWIW. Pelican are great [and darn near indestructable] but I don't know if anyone makes a tapeswitch for one. The best on a budget IMO is a G2 Nitrolon LED from Sure Fire, for about $65.00USD plus a tapeswitch (about $25.00 if desired...and I assume you do). If you decide to go the Hong Kong route please follow with a detailed range report. :)

Oh, and I don't think you could really go wrong with those rails.

$25 shipped. Somewhat of a SF copy. 300lumen R2, 5mode, comes with an 18650 LiIon. Reverse tail clickie, Will take SureFire pressure switches, Holster included. Also avail without crenulated bezel, as well as diff colors.

I don't have one of these but am considering one. Flashaholics recomendation. Great price to performance ratio.

I do have a DX bought AKOray K-106 for EDC. Great little single AA 200lm light that also takes 14500's. Also 6 mode and programmable.

Mav, I will prob try this out just for the heck of it. If it's like the BSA red dot I got just for the heck of it (which actually suits my bedroom defense needs OK) I may keep it after all. I don't really need a light because I'm a single dude in a simple layout Apt with no chances of unexpected yet welcome visitors (sadly ;)).

I agree with your gist....cheap can be more expensive in the long run....anyone reading this should make note. But DX reviews are usually pretty accurate as the fellows there are tech-savvy, and as I said I have had good luck with their Cree lights as gifts. Cree is the same LED module used in Fenix and Olight and others, btw.

So I will revive this thread if I ever get the setup.

BTW stealth that is a nice light. Even if it's really 200 lumens, which seems more likely with the R2, great deal and nice form factor.

Sounds good, the only thing I fear is recoil...a lot of the reviews is for general use, but like I say I have no experience, so I am eager to hear more. :)

Until recently surefire used a weaker more expensive LED, but switched to the XRE cree LED. I have one on my AR, its far brighter and just as tough but cost a fraction of the price, and has a better light beam.
I also have one of those dealextreme SSC P7 flashlights (4 core LED from S.Korea only), they are far brighter than anything you can buy aside from a full size spotlight, I use it at home here, it is 900 lumins and is builts very very good quality and durable.
I showed it to a few gun enthusiasts who spent a fortune on surefires, etc, they ordered the SSC P7 lights that night or within a week. An equivalent light under a name brand (I compared mine to one with a weaker LED in a Basspro shop, with the same flashlight body) was more than 6 times the price (and basspros price was good compared to their competition).

Mav, good point. I wonder if Xenon would be more or less susceptible to bursting from shock than LED? I'd assume more. I suppose it comes down to the circuitry in most cases though anyway.

Thanks for the recc SHvar.

There are also some interesting gadgets on DX like radio frequency arming vibration-set alarms...those who like gadgets would do well to browse.

I am sure it would be quite a bit more, so it may be a false concern. In a LED flashlight there is no filament to break and no lenses to be thrust out of alignment. From what I hear that is a big problem with green lasers on firearms. :)

Awesome thread with awesome posts.

Thanks for posting that site, Stealth!

I owe ya one!

I had an idea, though:

I saw extension tubes in the Accessories section, and the description says "for surefire lights."
Could this extension be used to stuff more batteries in, thus enabling the use of the 550 lumen LED???

or would the 550 lumen LED still be really bright with only two 123s ?

I am looking for a light for my AR...jsut in case. I hate to spend a fortune on a flashlight...so any idea how these hold up?

In theory it shouldn't be nearly as bright but should last quite a bit longer (but I am going from typical incandescent, halogen, mercury vapor, HPS, LPS, and metal halide lamp assemblies); also the life of a LED should not be paramount as they have a mean lifespan of about 100,000hrs/10yrs anyway. In order to get the maximum amount of light out of the Surefire 550 lamp I believe you will need 12v. or 4 CR123 cells. :)
