hey guys, i am looking to purchase a new shotgun for dove(and skeet) season this year, i use an old single shot 20 but i want to buy a remington 870 express. I know the 870's are good guns and i can get one for around 250 here at the sporting goods store.... but i have saved up some money extra, so now i have $300-360 in my budget.... i was wondering whether there would be any other brands/models that you would reccomend.. that are an improvment over the 870.....-TIA-RookieWing

also, i would need a mod choke for dove right? i think that's right

i have also seen charles daly field hunters and Browning BPS's... are they peices of crap? or not?

*edit, nevermind about the bps, i heard how heavy it was, im a small guy, and a weakling, you get the point.

There are no improvements over the 870 when it comes to pumps. A few like the Model 12 are as good. A few more like the BPS and Mossberg's 500/590 series are almost as good. None are, in my informed and entirely objective opinion, better.(Tongue inserted firmly into cheek)....

Use the extra money to BA/UU/R. Enjoy....

If you're looking for an improvement over the 870 Express at that price range, please consider a used 870 Wingmaster. $360 around here will usually get a used Wingmaster in very good (if not flat-out excellent) condition. Typically, they're just about broken in.

You could get a used Model 12 (which I like more than 870s), but at that price point, they are usually well used.

870exp

I used an 870 express this season. I never ever thought about qulity or handling at all, it has worked great. It is in 20ga and light enough that it aint no bother to carry for a few hours. IF there had been more doves near me they would have been dead as I only shot at 3, and 2 made it to my game pouch. I have a better spot that we found that I'll hit this weekend. My buddies tried it and all limited out in 20min. I'll feel pretty good about having this 870 with me this weekend. If the birds are still there this gun will get er done. Dont let the price fool you.:D

John,

To save you from searching through several thousand threads for the answer to this, and as a fairly new member myself, I'll help you join the club. I stumbled on the meaning only recently.

hey guys, thanks for all the advice, i think i am just going to get the 870 and [Buy Ammo, Use Up, And Repeat]. i am getting it in two weeks on sunday, then i will post a pic of it, even though you have one yourselves...

Better than 870 express

I know I am one of verrry few. I bought a Mossberg 500a several years ago. I have used it for payed Pheasant hunt, Deer, Dove, Quail, Clay pigeons. I use it for everything. Parts are cheap and surplus. You can get nearly any option you want. My kids like shooting it. In fact too well. We now have the 410, 20 and 12 guage. The only issue for me is the rattle. If you move too much, which you shouldnt be while Deer hunting. Outside of that, I love it. Good luck.

870 Express Combo

IMHO, the 870 Express, Combo is the best to be had for the amount paid. You can find a used one for $199.00, so, at least that I what I paid used. Use the extra csh to purchase a rifled, slug barrel.

I always change to an improved cylinder for dove season.

+1 for the 870Express, be sure to look at the stock, my finish was crappy and i had to redo it. mechanically sound though.

I'm in the camp of buying the used wingmaster instead of the Express. I am not impressed at all of the fit and finish of the express.

However, the new 2006 Express guns are supposedly nicer in the fit and finish department. Machined rib, new stock, dont know what else. Would be worth a look though.

I sure like my Winchester M1400 auto for dove, takes the sting out of a few days of good shooting. I recently went up to a friend's place opening day and we had three fantastic days of shooting. He and his son were complaining of sore shoulders, I was ready for another three days, LOL!

However, my gun is no longer made...:( ...sad, cause it's a really decent shotgun and was quite affordable. I gave $255 at Walmart for it about 20 years ago. The 870 is a fine dove gun and I can see nothing wrong with saving a few bucks and buying one. With a 3" chamber, if you ever wanna take on turkey or waterfowl with the gun, it gives you some versatility, too.

Yeah, I shoot modified on dove, normally. However, with interchangeable choke tubes, you can tailor to your shooting situation. I really prefer the knurled knob type Winchokes for choke tubes to the internal choke tubes, easier to change in the field when you decide they're coming in too close and you need an IC in the gun, but if you carry a dime, you don't need a wrench on your 12 ga Rem chokes.:D

If all you're ever going to hunt is dove and upland game, a Wingmaster is fine. However, I'd pick an Express with plastic stocks and matte finish, personally, because I do a lot of duck hunting in the salt marsh. That's rough on a Wingmaster. It'd look worse than the Express after a few years, I can tell you from experience. My shotguns are for HUNTING, not looking at.

I just picked up a rebate form at my local dealer. Remington is offering a $30 rebate on 870 expresses right now. That's some good change to invest in practice shells.
