Hi there fellow reloaders, hope you are having a great day. We’ll, I finally got my can out of jail for my 10.3” 300 blk build and of course have been chomping at the bit to load up some reliable subs to fling at random crap in the desert. I already know the powders everyone has loaded subs successfully with and have 2 lbs of cfe blk to start this project with. Went to the local shop here to pick up some 220s and found they had only 2 boxes of .308 220s, one being the hornady rn and the other being the old Winchester ppsp that looks like a 30-06 bullet. I picked up the Winchester because it was $15 cheaper and I don’t expect to hunt with these so reliable expansion isn’t necessary. I measured a Sierra 220 hpbt at 1.478 and the Winchester is 1.30 so adjusted the coal off the Sierra accordingly and came up with 2.142 and loaded up a ladder from 10.8-11.4 for the first go. Probably could have pushed them a little deeper but tested in my mags and the ogive is around.267 on the bump and seems they pop up straight and dry cycle just fine. I use hexmags which seem to feed better for me than pmags or lancers so I’m going with it. Tested some 220 freedom hush rounds this past week and they shot beautifully but don’t cycle my action so I figured cfe blk would do the trick. Ok, after all this rambling my question is, have any of you ever tried a bullet like this in subsonic 300 blk? Or maybe the hornady rn since those are the only 220s I can get at home he moment.

The Winchester bullet length is 1.39, it didn’t type the 9,lol.

I’ve used 200gr FNGC cast bullets and they did just fine.
You won’t see any appreciable expansion from 200-220gr bullets. You will see bullet yaw, however.

Um how does an 06 bullet look different than a .308 or 300 wim mag or 7.62x39. Just wondering

These bullets I got are shaped like a hotdog unlike the standard Spitzer type .308 bullet. They were intended for the 30-06/300 win mag, these are old from 1991 long before 300 blk was developed and the old Winchester western load manual(1988) the old timer at the shop had recommended them for 30-06. I tested them today at 2.10 oal and they are the best, smoothest feeding subs I’ve tried with 3/4” or so accuracy at 50 yds. Will be a bummer when I run out because this will be the only box I can get. 11.7 gr cfe blk @ 2.10 1022 fps avg es18 sd7.

Find something you like and you can't find it any more. Bullets or work boots it's the same. Good testing

I’ve thought about casting and coating some for fun subs, sounds like a cool project. Ya, not looking for a expander just plinking and function testing. When I hunt with the blk, I only use supers but maybe in the future I’ll put together some Lehigh or maker subs.👍

Haha, no kidding. I used to be a commercial crab fisherman and we would get a good pair of boots then they would wear out and couldn’t get the same ones again, what a bitch! Oh well, the rock keeps turning.👍

I have used 170 gr 30-30 style bullets without problems. The coal may require adjustment depending on shape the bullet may jam rifling and need seated deeper.

Update on the “hot dog subs” project. Tested again today from 10.8-12 gr cfe blk at 2.10 oal and all cycled and lrbho on all. 965 fps on the low end and 1115 fps at 12 gr. 11.1 gr was 1015 fps and a 7 sd with sub 3/4” accuracy at 80 yds so that’s the one for this gun. Of all the powders I’ve tested suppressed, cfe blk is the second cleanest powder I’ve used for a suppressed 300 blk, the brass looks like unsuppressed fired cases. N110 is the number one cleanest I’ve used but cfe blk is a close second. I also tested some 220 gr freedom munitions hush ammo which cycled and shot great but no lrbho, es34 sd17 1007 fps avg.

You might try looking in older, long established gun shops in your area as those bullets were often left behind on the shelves as newer more "accurate" fare was introduced. Where I hunt blunt round nosed bullets often are less prone to deflection when flying through thickets to claim my hard won game. Also I rarely see a shot more than 50 YDS so not deflecting when I hit a small branch is important to me.

That is a good tip and I did find 4 more boxes doing just what you said. I’ve found these to be excellent subsonic blackout bullets and have to agree with the less deflection theory. They have got left behind while others are buying the standard Sierra 220, sub x 190( which I wish I could try), and the berrys 220. These things, for some reason, only change POI at 1030 fps and 80 yds by 1 1/2” from my 2270 fps super load. It’s making it really nice for holdovers since I use a 4x acog and it’s 3 1/2 - 4” off with factory loads. Also getting .75” groups at 80 yds, good stuff!!👍🇺🇸
