300gr SST Enough For NM ELK???"
LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-08 AT 06:32 PM (MST)
Sabots With Bullets:
50 Caliber Sabot
w/45 Caliber, 300 Grain SST/ML
Super Shock Tip Muzzle Loading
Two 777 Pellets
Hunting Elk with ML this fall and good buddy of mine said great combo.Anyone using this set up?

You don't mention the range your talking about. Lots of Elk have been killed cleanly with plain old .490 lead roundballs, so I can't see any problem with that combination.

I've never been fortunate enough to go elk hunting but I would say you're ready for anything in the lower 48 within reasonable range of course. Good luck by the way, get a big one and post some pics.

I have found that a .612PRB backed by 120gr of Goex 2Fg, and ignited by a piece of sharpened rock kills Elk real well!!!:D

Ok oneshooter just cuz your senior member dont be a wise ass> Dont hate on the new inlines or people that shoot them brother. If you dont have any info on the subject DONT POST.

I think the 300 grain would be just fine. I might favor a little heavier bullet to crush through thoses heavy bones and thick skin. I don't have any experience with .45's but just I am just going on bullet weight. I don't see how anything oneshooter said was some how against inlines or the people who shoot them. He was just telling you his experiences with muzzleloading for elk. Inline are not my preference but I would never say anything bad about someone who wanted to use them.

I use 100 gr of pyrodex and a 345gr maxiball and havn't had a problem yet.But then again im running open sights and the longest shot i'm going to take is 100-110 yards.

I don't hunt elk and I don't like to shoot heavy bullets. But I still suggest to use these Buffalo Bullets. Why? Well, all of the reviewers seem to like them, and because I wish that I could shoot them. But I know that I won't like them because they probably create too much recoil. So go enjoy shooting some of them for me then! :D

I donno guys my granpa took a lot of elk with a .30 , I have took a few with a .45 trapdoor. I know folk who i wont name that shot a cow or a fawn with a .22lr over the years . Now not to make it right today but it was practice some years ago to huny your camp meat . My point is that anything bigger than a 30-30 is waisted , and on blackpowder well ill say the same . Grandad shot an 06 and stalked , grandma shot a .35 rem and set , she killed two bears and 7 elk setting on the same rock with a junk .35 pump . She shot them all with iron sights and said that at the time she could not think of anything but the shot . She died two years ago at an agreed age of 97 , killed her last bear after he 60th birthday . My grandfather was a far better wingshooter than her , ill however keep her " i can hit with it " attitude in mind for rifles .
As a side note i still have her .35 rem and i drag it out to show local le just how bad a pump gun can be . I can shoot bigger things in the air with it , call it pistol mags , and then ill take apart a junk car with it . a mag seems to provide the education that a squad car is not much cover lol .

Yes....

Hey there:
I have tested that bullet at about the same velocity.
Note > the 300 grain T/C Shock Wave (Blue and Yellow ) tip bullets are the exact same bullet as the SST/ML.

These are very well made bullets. I have had a few problems with using them on Deer. Could not get them to open up right. But.... You will be hunting Elk.
Much larger critter and will like that extra penatration.
The Shock Waves are made by Hornaday just packaged for T/C...
The yellow sabots are not right. They are their so called easy loaders. Yes they are. Accuracy goes away.. I have done a lot of testing with all 3 of these. The tighter they fit the better. Yep they are harder to load. but they can deliver extreme accuracy. My test results were 1/2" groups at 100 meters with all 3. Bullet being the only variable.

I use Pyrodex "P" 80 grains. your 777 may be hotter and give slightly higher velocity. I got 1550 FPS.

I have stopped using them on deer .. But beleive them to be made right for ELK... BEAR , etc. They seem just a tadd bit too stiff for the 1550 FPS on deer.

I see no reason they would not work and If I were to chase ELK that is the bullet I would use .

Good luck , Whack a big one.

O I didnt mean to jump all over you oneshooter but I fell like this forum should be spilt into primitive and modern Blackpower.I read alot of the treads and I see alot of "O you might as well shoot a centerfire rifle" crap. I dont mean to sound off but I have shot a modern ML for awhile and love the sport. But this forum leans toward the primitive weapon. IMO

Hey There :
I too am with the in line crowd. Well maybe not such a crowd here.
I have been there and done that. No problem with the cap a ballers or flinters.
I just like my Encore, Whites etc.

I have hunted deer for 35 plus Years now and have used just about every thing legal to hunt them with.
I have found that in SW Michigan where center fire rifles are not legal for hunting deer , I have a 100% success rate of good clean drops and kills.

The accuracy far execceds the new age shot guns. And the new age hand Cannons are very hard to master.
The .50 cal ML. works very well for me.

I also make it my passion. I am an extreme accuracy nut. Even with the ML.
The cost of the gun is not and will not be an issue with me. Some it is. That is fine and nothing wrong with it.

I have done a lot of testing for myself and others. In the last two years I have fired and tested over 1400 rounds of BP loads and have pretty well nailed down what I would and would not use.
My older "Whites" would toss 480 grainers and do it with class. Many times giving me almost one hole groups.
I had 3 of those rifles and now only have one left. A Rodger Ragland signature series with a very low ser. number. 1 of 500 Made.
I bought my son an Encore after he saw how well mine would shoot. His shoots just about as well, and he loves that rifle. These are all we hunt deer with. We have many many to choose from , but (Now know what works) for us.
You are not alone... Have fun with yours. Good shootin.

Thanks alot wildfire. I'am glad there is at least one person behind me. Anyone else??

I wish you the best of luck.
Please remember that shot placement is always the single most significant factor.
I have passed up many animals in anticipation of a better one only to regret my decision.
I have never regretted passing up a questionable shot.

I am w/ you flores. We are all freinds here man. Nobody here is against you. Just cause somebody likes one thing doesn't mean they hate everyone who doesn't like the same thing.

2 seperate areas might not be a bad idea, but its all black powder and traditional and modern bp have alot to learn from each other. I think if it were seperate areas we would miss out on alot.

Good luck on your elk hunt and post pictures!
