Hey all.
Hope everyone's feeling good.

I'm planning to work up a hunting load in 45-70 and I'm not wanting to waste many bullets finding a good load. Looking for good velocity and accuracy . this is obviously a simple load work up except the bullets are $2 each and I'd like to get an ideal load in as few shots as possible.

If you've got some load data for 45-70 using these bullets - 20230121_092959.jpg
Please help me out with it if possible. Modern Lever action loading are what I'm looking for, rifle is a modern single shot with a 25" barrel.
Possibly useful powders on hand are:
Imr4198
Imr4227
2400
Leverevolition (not sure on this one)

If I need to try to locate another powder I will but it would need to be clearly better than what I've got laying around. I'd prefer to use the imr4198 if possible.

Any help or data would be appreciated. Will mostly be for whitetail but if I get the chance to hunt something larger I don't want to have to go back to the drawing board.

Thanks!

Sort of, I found data from Barnes but it was only 2 powders - an aa powder and a vv powder, neither of which I have ever even heard of

Okay, well here's something that might be a little more helpful.

Edit: Also have some data for H4895 if that's of interest.

I've used that same bullet in my 458 SOCOM. It does a number on hogs (200# ). I have them moving around 1700 fps using W296. I've dropped 2 with one shot 1 time, nerves system hit on both. Neither of them moved when they dropped, 100 yrds off my back porch. I had baited a hole so the front one was on it's knees (broad side) and not moving. I waited for the other one to get near it where I had more corn laid out for them.

I loaded up 15 test rounds today. Decided to use the imr 4227, had too much trouble confirming a imr4198 load and had some discrepancies I had concerns with.
Did 1 grain ladder, trying to get near max without wasting too many bullets. Used the data shared by @WrongHanded and started at 38.5 grains- loaded 5, loaded 5 more at 39.5 and 5 more at 40.5. I'll shoot the first 5 over chronograph and make sure everything's looking good . I'll shoot the next 2 loads for accuracy. If it all looks good I may bump the charge up to 41 grains and if the group's look good I'll call it done.
I'm well aware the cartridge doesn't need tons of velocity but I'm trying to extend the range a little with a light bullet specific for whitetail, should be plenty.

The bullets are just too expensive to experiment much with and I'm hoping I get a accurate load in here somewhere without needing to do too much more testing. We'll see next weekend how they do. Due to cold weather I may shoot indoors.

The spread on the powders run #56 4227- #71 aa-2230. There are a ton of choices in there including a hunting favorite of 3031. If you don't find a winner in a hurry that would be a good next choice.
