Lyman's 48th and 49th both list 300 H&H as using WLR primers, so I was talking to the gentleman at the gun store, and my "oh by the way..." question was, what primers should I be using, he said "magnum of course". I told him everywhere I've seen used standard primers. So sure enough he whips out a Sierra manual that lists it as using WLRM's.

Anyone ever loaded this cartridge? If so, what did you use? Powder I'll be using is IMR-4831. 180 gr boat tail.

FYI, the current Speer Manual #14 lists loads for IMR4831 and 180 gr bullets with standard large rifle primers which happens to be CCI in their manual. WLP primers could be used also if you use the starting load and work up. :)

Anyone have load data using a Magnum primer? I can't recall if max loads were 69 or 68 gr.

loadedround, why would you post to use a large pistol primer in a starting load of a .300 WM when not one loading manual would suggest that?

Maybe because I had a bout of Senioritis...that post should read Winchester LRP(Large Rifle Primers). Nest time I will preview my post, thanks for catching my error.

Lee manual lists LR. My Hornady book is out in the car, and I am lazy, but loaddata.com says that the 7th edition Hornady calls for LRM primers.

My 44th Lyman lists large rifle so I have been using them with my 300 h&h and imr 4350 for years and I can't make this caliber shoot bad no matter how much coffee I drink.

What it boils down to is that you can use either standard or magnum primer, but it needs to be used at the beginning of your load work ups. No swapping primer types after you develop a load without backing off the powder charge.

i load this for my brother. i always use magnum primers with imr 4831. i always use them in my 300 win mag as well. if i use a faster powder,(aka, light loads) i use a regular primer.
