OK, I don't load rifle I only load for 4 calibers of pistol so this is all new to me.
I understand the trimming of brass what I am not sure of is what bullet diameter I need. According to my lyman manual the SMMI specs show .309, I check a factory load at the case mouth I get .303. Can I use a regular 308 bullet ? If so any recommendations for one ? I would prefer a RN 150 grain if I can find one. I plan on using Varget powder or H335 any others I should consider ? Thanks

would that be IMR or H 4895 or both ?

Either will work, but are not the same powder. Hodgdon's Extreme H4895 is one of my favored powders in several different cartridges due to it's flexibility and it's lack of ambient temperature sensitivity.
If this is being used in a Savage M99, it's best not to push the envelope on maximum loads, because you can stretch the brass and shorten the brass life. It's a great cartridge, and uses .308" bullets.

I use 3031 powder, 150 gr. Spire Point bullets in my '99 Savage. I've used this combination for years, excellent results. Hope this helps.

300 Savage / 308 bullets

2bfree, I have a 1951 Savage model 99 in 300 Savage, I have been loading .308 bullets (jacketed) and .309-.310 cast gas checked for years (mostly jacketed).
I have used BL-C2, H-335, IMR3031, H-4895 and IMR4064 all with good to great results, your mileage may vary. Mine doesn't like cast so much but prefers Sierra 150 grn Pro Hunter's and Speer 165 grn Grand Slam's, with BL-C2 and 4064 respectively. Although this is no tack driver, it will muster 1-1/2" to 2" @ 100 with 5 shots when I do everything right. Plenty good for deer and cool to carry in the woods

Thanks Tahoe2, I found the 150 Grain Sierra Pro Hunter RN at PV , should be here Monday. Found Dies at Brownells, should be here Tuesday. Have not had any luck finding powder though, Been looking for Varget,3031, and 4895. I did have a guy that wanted to trade me 1# of Varget for 2# of my HP38 +8 bucks, just could not see it.

tahoe2,

Try Hornady 150 gr. Spire Points in your .300 Savage. I've got one that was made in '47, its about the only bullet that will shoot good in mine. Unscoped, iron sights, it will shoot 1 1/2" all day long, some days better. I use IMR 4064 powder.

Thanks Ham, if I can ever find any bullets I'll give em a try, at the store yesterday and still nothing, but powders are coming back.
I have the Pro Hunters and Grand Slams in abundance from a past deal (300 ea), I am still looking for that "perfect load". ;)
