I went to Wal-Mart today to buy a Weatherby Vanguard (Howa 1500 on a Butler Creek stock) in either 270 or 308. They sell for 388 dollars and some change. I came home with a clearance marked Vanguard in 30-06 for 300 dollars. I mounted my Nikon 4X40 and took it to the range.

I shot this group once I got it dialed in. I measured to the outside of the two holes furthest from each other and came up with 1/16th over 1.5 inches (whatever that is). I was told that I should use the "Center To Center" way of measuring groups. I would if I knew how to figure it up. I know that the 30 caliber bullet is subtracted from the group or something like that.

Anyway, I am very pleased with this rifle and I have less than 500 dollars in it complete and new. I am shooting Hornady Light Magnum 150gr. SST's. I shot this group from a solid bench and I know the rifle would shoot much better in the hands of someone better than me.

sounds like a bargain! It always pays to check out the sporting goods department when they put thier old dusty inventory on clearance.

Good shooting, and good price! How about a picture of the rifle? I'd like to see it with the 4x40 Nikon mounted. Thanks Heath

Great! Remember that it is more important that the rifle is accurate (shoots to the same place every time you bring it out, 0@200 yds), than if the rifle is precise (allways shoots small groups, but that group changes place from session to session. For a real test of your hunting rifle shoot only one shot from a cold barrel on the same target every time you go shooting. If after 5 sessions the resulting group is <2moa, and right on at 200 yds you got a keeper. Remember that to really brag abot how well your rifle shoots it should be the cumlative average of 5 shot groups, not the best group ever. To easly measure your group take the holes that are the farthest apart, and measure from the outside of one hole to the inside of the other. you also might try the target with 4, 2" squares in all 4 quadrents, its easyer to shoot good groups thru a scope using that style of target.

Thanks for the info John. It will come in handy with the other one I just bought. This one is in 270 and the test target is one ragged hole. I picked it out of a few based on the target.

Wal-Mart is no longer ordering these and what they have has to go, hence the price break. Not many people know about them apparently.
