I saw the post on the .300 win mag recoil, what is the recoil like on a .300 weatherby mag? Is it much worse than a Remington 870 express super magnum (7 1/2lbs) shooting 3'' slugs or buckshot? Or any 12 gauge. I know it depends on weight stock and everything, but I just want ageneral idea or it compared to a 12 gauge.

If I can shoot a 12 gauge no problem, should I have a problem with the .300 weatherby mag?

I have a friend whose 7(maybe 8 by now) year old daughter( 60lbs soaking wet) shoots his Vangard in .300 Weatherby mag. while sitting on daddy's lap. So I would say it is managable.

It's not horrible, I own a .300 Weatherby mag. If you can shoot that 112 gauge with no problem you can handle it.

It must have a muzzle brake?

Wow, My friend(big and thick) complains about how bad his 7mm rem mag kicks and another has a recoil pad on his .270 win. This little girl will out shoot them anyday.

I have a Vanguard in 300 Weatherby. It rocks but it's not painful. It's a sharper recoil than the 12g. but not unmanagable. Helps to have a LimbSaver recoil pad on your end of it but you could extended periods if you had to with it.

My Savage M110 in .300RUM (slightly more recoil than a .300wby) isn't so bad from a supported position, but from a field position, it will usually put the scope into your eyebrow, cutting you and drawing a lot of blood.

The punch from the recoil isn't that bad. About like a Remington 870 with 3.5" mag shells. But, the M870 dosen't have the scope tube to bing you on the eyebrow. Even with a rubber cushioned eyepiece, it grabs and rolls the skin cutting just like a jab from a boxer with a glove on.

With 165gr loads reduced to .300winmag velocities, it's a kitten thats been declawed.....

lol, wow man, just,,,,,,,,,,,,,wow.

i have a nephew thats 7, and he is a strapping boy. probably the biggest in his class, and i wouldnt expose his little shoulder to anything that recoils even remotely close to a 300 weatherby magnum. he cant even shoulder and hold up my m1 garand without bending over backwards and looking extremely uncomfortable.

little kids like that should be behind a little youth henry 22 or similar.

surely your bud takes the recoil with his shoulder and just lets her pull the trigger right?

tricking a little kid like that into taking a big magnums recoil is not cool man.

surely hes shouldering it and letting her pull the trigger or something?????

Trust me Wayne (300lbs)didn't have to trick her into anything. She is a "daddy's girl" and his deer hunting buddy. If daddy does it she wants to do it. She sits on his lap and shoots anything daddy will let her. While I'm sure Wayne takes most of the recoil, it is the daughter that sights through the scope as well as takes the shot. She takes after her mom who isn't 5" tall and does not weigh 100lbs.(she shoots a 7mm-08). Oh, She also hunts turkey with a 12ga.

i saw a guy at the range 2 weeks ago that was an easy 325 and he had a buzzle brake made for his vangaud in 300 win mag because it hurt him so bad. my wifes grandpa has a vangaurd in 300 weatherby mag that i have shot several times. while it didn't tickle by any means it wasn't bad enough to need a muzzle brake to shoot. imho

moral to the story, i guess you could use
'different strokes, for different folks' in this case

That little girl will be shooting a .460 wby mag when she's 16 lol.

So I should be able to shoot it no problem, 12 gauge recoil doens't bother me?

I traded that Vangard to Wayne,I got it from Thomas Crocker on THR. I never shot it myself so I don't know personally how badly it recoils(you could ask Thomas). The worst I have ever been kicked was by a single shot 12ga. IMHO,if you can handle a 12ga w/3'' magnum loads, you should be able to handle the .300 Weatherby. You won't know for sure until you shoot one.

The only 300 Wby Magnum I've ever fired is a Wby Vanguard with a muzzle break. The recoil was amazingly mild. The muzzle blast and concussion were brutal, though. Firing a 270 seemed stiff in comparison, in terms of recoil. But the muzzle blast seemd like an M1 Abrams. :uhoh:

Yah, the .300 wby mag is loud by itself, but with a muzzle brake I can't imagine.

i think the thread starter will be ok with it.

i think if a 12g does not give you any problems then you will be fine.

this is not to say i think they are the same. i think without a break, the big belted magnum cartridges are quite a bit "snappier" for lack of a better term. but i think you will be fine with it.

i honestly wouldnt want to go and shoot one like i go and shoot my garand (150rds per trip or so) if it were not magnaported or something similar, but i dont think a box of 20 would kill me.
