Aren't both the 300 Whisper and the 300 Blackout, 223 cases necked up to 30 caliber? Is there any other difference in the two?
There also was I believe in the past a 30 TCU and 30 Apache that were/are the same thing as the both of them also.

The 300 Blackout is hot right now but the idea is not new by any means.

from what I understand whisper is based on a .221 fireball case and BLK is .223 but I may be wrong
I know wikipedia listed whisper having some loadings that meet the SAAMI specs for BLK

other more knowledgeable people will be along shortly

They are NOT the same, but are very, very similar. The 300 AAC Blackout is basically the concept of 300 Whisper in a SAAMI-approved, standardized, publicly available specification - and also with a slight change in chamber dimensions allowing slightly more powder within a 55k pressure limit, and therefore slightly more velocity with supersonic loads.

In general, 300 Whisper ammo is fine in a 300BLK chamber, but 300BLK ammo may or may not be OK in a 300 Whisper chamber - there have apparently been multiple chamber specs for 300 Whisper.

The 300 Whisper uppers that have appeared in the last 12 months (S&W, for example) are probably made to 300BLK chamber dimensions, but you need to ask the manufacturer or cast the chamber to be certain.

The 300 Whisper was originally made with .223 brass and in fact if you ordered brass from JD in the early days you would get brass made from .223 cases. The .221 is just easier to form cases from as it requires just a very tiny bit of trimming to finish out the case mouth.

The 300 Whisper as loaded by Hornady is SAAMI and the 300 Whisper ammo made and sold in Europe for quite a few years has been certified by their SAAMI equivalent the C.I.P. (Commission Internationale Permanente pour l'Epreuve des Armes à Feu Portatives ).

The 300 Whisper as loaded by Hornady is SAAMI ...
How is that possible? Hornady may be a SAAMI member, but the Whisper is not a SAAMI listed cartridge. Sure, Hornady is loading it to safe pressures and I would have no problem shooting it, but it can't be called a SAAMI loading.

What I've read is that Hornady is loading a cartridge that fits within SAAMI spec for 300BLK, but they are selling it as 300 Whisper due to some marketing agreement with SSK / JD Jones. Yes, it's a confusing mess.

I've used 300BLK ammo from UMC, PNW, and Gunn, and have been happy with all three.

The parent case to all of them, the .221, the .223, the .300 Whisper, & the .300BLK, is the .222 Rem. designed in 1950, even the .222 Rem. Mag. is made from the .222 Rem. it just stretched out by 4mm.................

It depends - do you consider 5.56mm and 223 to be the same? Think of 300 BLK as 5.56mm and 300 Whisper as 223 in the sense that 300 BLK has a longer throat than at least some Whisper(R) drawings, and so can be loaded faster for any given pressure.

I am sure it is possible to make brass that works in both, as that is what Hornady does - but the 300 Whisper drawings are proprietary and trade secrets, so no one can post a drawing to clarify the dimensions.

300 BLK is the final SAAMI standard for the 300-221 cartridge.
