Hello Everyone,

Does anyone own an AR-15 in .300 Whisper?

This caliber intrigues me, but I know very little about its intended purpose and uses. In other words, is it primarily a hunting round? Antipersonnel? Antimaterial? All of the above?

Can anyone give me any input on the quality of the cartridge?

What kind of loaded ammo is available and how is its quality?

What kind of range and accuracy can realistically be expected with this round?

Can a USGI AR-15 magazine capable of holding 30 rounds of .223 Remington hold 30 rounds of .300 Whisper? If not, how many can it hold?

Finally, it is my understanding that it was intended to be used with a supressor at times. Who makes one for this combination?

Thanks for the input.

.300 Whisper is designed so that it can be used in an AR-15 with little modification- just a different upper reciever (maybe even a different barrel) and you're set. The cartridge is the same size as the .223, just it isn't bottlenecked like the .223- it's straightwalled with only a little bit of taper. Suppressed guns work best with sub-sonic ammunition, so that there is no supersonic *CRACK*. But, when you take a .223 55gr. bullet and bring it down to 1000fps, you've basically got a .22LR (energy wise). The only way you can increase muzzle energy while remaining subsonic is to use heavier, bigger bullets- thus the .300 Whisper. What is it to be used for? That's up to you. I'm pretty sure it uses the same magazines as an AR-15.

The 300 WHISPER was designed to headshoot sentries out to 200

Meters from a suppressed weapon with a 250gr 30 caliber bullet traveling 1050fps. This it did/does in fine style.
All information on the cartridge and its' rifles can be obtained from J.D. Jones at SSK Industries over in Ohio as he is the inventer of the cartridge and all its' systems.
ALL 300 WHISPER GUNS FROM ANY OTHER SOURCE ARE COUNTERFEITS and generally are not worth carrying home.

I've finally had the pleasure of firing a .300 Whisper upper on a Bushmaster lower, not suppressed. I have to say, for such heavy bullet, the recoil was low, not much more than the .223 at standard velocity. I might actually buy one from SSK.

Here's the website.

I remember seeing a shooting show that had J.D. Jones showing off his new .3oo Whisper. It is a .221 Fireball case blown out to .30 cal. He had his custom AR that would shoot the high velocity rounds of IIRC 130 gr bullets that were essentially the same power as a 7.62x39 round, and the 'silent' rounds that were 180-190 gr bullets that were subsonic. The gun was modified for full auto as well as single shot and bolt locking for one at a time. A gas port was turned, depending on which cartridge was fired on how it ejected the round. No gas for single shot subsonic rounds, manual bolt pull. Full gas for subsonic rounds in semi and full auto loads. Half gas for high velocity rounds.

Things may have changed, it has been about 15 years ago when I saw the program.

I was thinking about getting one myself, although not supressed. It might even make a decent deer hunting round for around here. Corbon has a 150grain JSP that moves out at an advertised 2000 fps. That's pretty decent. At $17.50 a box it can get a bit pricey.

The ammo prices are what keeps the popularity down. I won't get one until I'm set up for reloading again and can find a source for .300 Whisper brass that is affordable. I'm not into fireforming .221 fireball brass or modifying .223 brass to make some.

Good Shooting

I thought they built the 300 whisper for shooting rams or sheep?
Didn't realize JDJ designed it for shooting people.

There is no fire forming to make .300 whisper brass. Just run .221 fireball brass through the whisper sizing die. Simple as that. My guns are .300/.221 so I guess they are not counterfit. I use a Gemtech TRP suppressor on my bolt rifle as well as my ar. I had a custom barrel installed on my model 700 that has a 1 in 8 twist. Accuracy is excellent. My favorite subsonic bullet is the Sierra 240 grain. Of all the suppressed calibers I have this one is the cat' meow.

Quarterbore's instructions are for forming from .221 Fireball brass. I am looking for info on how to do it from .223 brass which they don't have there unless I am missing something.

Thanks,

Josh
