308 Case Length

I am getting ready to trim some 308 brass. Hornady states 2.015" max case length.

What length do you all trim to?

I will be reloading Hornady 150 FMJs and Sierra 168 Match Kings.

Brass is LC Match.

Trim to length for .308 is 2.005"

I trim to 2.010, but I trim every time. The gods honest truth is anything between Sammi minimum and maximum is good but if you trim to book trim length you may get more loadings between trimmings. I don't move a lot of brass when I size, .001 bump so I don't need to trim often, I just end up squaring it up.

What length do you all trim to?

2.005". The Giraud makes it too easy to trim those LC cases down and chamfer and debur at the same time, provided you keep your resizing within .001" which is easier said than done on some of those once fired LC cases. ETA: come to think of it, I did set my Giraud triway trimmer to 2.007"-2.008" because I was having trouble keeping those once fired LC cases within .001".

2.010 for me.

I also trim to 2.007 - 2.008. If the case is at 2.010 or less I do not trim it at all.

I just trimmed them to .2005.

I plan to load some 150s and 168s tonight. My powder will be IMR 4895. I haven't decided on my primers. I have CCI, Remington, Federal, and Federal Match.

I've always used the recommended length of 2.005.

I have replaced the original nuts on the case holders with Hornady style lock rings. That makes caliber changes a breeze. I have separate cutter heads for every caliber that I trim. Expensive but worth it to me.

I use a Carbide expander ball on the cartridges that I load the most. It seems to stretch the case less that the non-carbide expanders.

where did you find the Lake City match brass if you don't mind saying? Is there more available? I always end up just using the machine gun brass with generally acceptable results.

At an Estate Sale. I picked up 600+ 762s, 209 are marked NM. The rest are LC mil. Also picked up 500+ 30-06, 8 lbs sealed IMR 4895, and a real nice WWII M1 Garand stock.

I trim to 2.00”. Winchester new brass is 2.003 out of the box and the neck opening cleans up with just a little shaved off.
