So..

I've been wanting a long gun for some time now, and recently had the chance to try out a friends Savage Model 11 in .243.. I loved it.. The accutrigger and stock mixed with the solid feel and smooth (enough) action were enough to make me pull the trigger, as it were.

However, I'm a fan of the .308 win round so I bought the Savage Model 11FCNS in .308

Just thought I'd share.. Now, what do you all suggest for a 3-9x40 scope?

What Scope?

I just bought a new (discontinued, made in 2006, but new in box-unfired) Model 11 in 7mm WSM. I put a Leupold 3-9 x 40 VXII on it, because that's basically what I have on my Rugers - .270 and .257 Roberts. The scope on the Roberts is 26 years old, hunted from the Adirondacks in NY to MT, still holds zero, no fog, no problems. The scope on the .270 has been on there absorbing max loads with 150gr Noslers for 14 years, same story - no problems.

You can get more scope, and spend more money, but for how I use rifles, the Leupolds have served me well and caused me no regrets.;)

For a budget scope, the Nikon ProStaff is serving me very well on my Savage in .270 WSM. The gun killed the Simmons that it came mounted with, but the Nikon is holding up fantastically. However, for a little bit more a Leupold can be had.

very nice, I'm sure you'll like it

I don't know your glass budget, but take a look at what bushnell offers around the 4200 series.

and welcome to THR!

Thank you all for the tips, thoughts, and the welcome.. I've been lurking here for awhile and figured a new gun was a good reason to jump in.

In a scope, as I shoot paper 99% of the time, I'm looking at about $200..

And I've never had a "new" long gun before, tell me your feelings on the barrel break-in procedure?

Should I just follow the instructions on the Savage site, or there a better more preferred method?
