got a new Bushmaster 308 carbine with only rail on top, planning on shootin hogs out to 300 yards more or less. got some spare scopes with no rifle to sit on, but trying to decide to stay with regular scope, red dot or holographic sights. any input on this ?appreciate any input.

you will need very high rings or a raiser on most flat tops,i prefer to use a raiser, then you can have your optic,s with the rings on and can change out very quickly if needed. i have several scopes and reflex-red dot sights that are sighted in on my ar and hold zero very well when changed out. eastbank.

Before setting the rifle up as pictured I used the setup in the second image. The scope was just to see how the rifle shot.

The additional hardware:

The parts seen came from Brownells.

300yds isn't very far. I mounted a 2-10x v-10 Weaver on a one-piece mount on my LR308 and it's worked well. Also a setup designed for hogs, it allows me to go all the way to 2x and all the way up to 10x with nice, clear, sharp glass.

As far as the mount goes, I'd go with a one piece. The PEPR is pretty popular because it's a good mount and pretty inexpensive. If cost is no object, then American Defense, Larue, Bobro, etc.

Yeah, a 1-4x would be a great choice. You can set it on 1x for fast up-close shooting, or 4x for when you need a little magnification to help spot the target.

I have a Burris TAC30 1-4x24, and love it. I have it on an M1A, and used it in a run and gun just yesterday with great results. I think it would be a perfect optic for hogs.

It has a pretty cool reticle with hold-over points that work well for either 5.56 or 7.62. The reticle is illuminated, and is truly daylight-visible, which isn't true of most illuminated scopes. For less than $300, it is quite the bargain.

I would also warn you against Chinese-made scopes, especially for a .308... I had a Leatherwood CMR on my M1A before that Burris, and it didn't last 150 rounds before breaking. The prices on some of those can be tempting, but I would skip them.

I have never owned a bushmaster 308, so I dont know how heavy the bbl is, but I did have a DPMS which weighed a ton. It was a bench rifle, not a combat gun, so thats what I'm picturing with yours. Now, if your main purpose is accuracy and shooting from a bipod/rest , then there is no reason to go with an acog: on all my heavy AR set ups I have anywhere from a 4-14 or 6-18 scope which (on an accurate rifle) will zap golfballs at 300yds (bipod or benched) . a low-mag scope will not deliver this kind of groundhog-head accuracy at long range. Furthermore, if you do want the CQ option with this set up, just get an angle mount and add a deltapoint dot or the doktor/burris equivalent (you tilt the rifle to the left and there it is) .
from personal experience, I'll never buy another pepr mount. on my 6.8 it constantly shot loose, and had to be tightened to the point that I thought the bolts were about to shear off, and burris never responded to any requests for advise. a heavier caliber would make it worse. But I do agree that good one-piece mounts are inherently more stable then multiple spacers and risers sandwiched together

I would never put cheap optics on a rifle like this, whether bolt action, or AR or M1A, these are $1200-$1600 rifles and aint gonna put any but good optics. I stick to Leupolds and an occasional Weaver Grand Slam.

okay, I realize that by 'hog', you western guys mean a pig, not a 'groundhog' . that changes my answer.

for a 300 yard situation on a small target, I still recommend a leupold mk 4 4.5-14x

for tactical situations, an Eotech is great at close range but hits on moving targets at 300 are more difficult, especially when the sun catches that big glass surface.

for all around use, I've recently become a fan of the leupold prismatic and have one on a 6.8 piston flattop and another on a ptr 91 sc.

for pure versatility, a leupold dangerous game 1.5-5 illuminated with a circle dot retrofit reticle is the way to fly. I'd include pics of each of these options on rifles I have, but cant figure that process out yet. new here.

I don't think I'd go with either a holographic or a red dot on a .308, unless the rifle was being used for a specific purpose for up close shooting. I'd go with some sort of magnified optic.

How much magnification is up to you. I haven't hunted hogs in a while, but the guys that I know that still do run either a 1-4X or some flavor of 2-7x. My favorite hunting scope is a 2.5-10X Nightforce.

Hog hunting is a nighttime project.

I wouldn't limit myself to a max magnification of only 4x at 300yds when vision is already that limited by the darkness.

I wouldn't look at anything less than 2-7x.
