what options are available in the .308 or similar calibers for semi auto precision rifles? I have .223 semis and their accurate but I need some more oomph.

well you can go to 260 rem 7mm -08 243 all based on the 308 case 338-08 and 358. the 338 you might have to make your own cases

Like Girodin says, what 's your budget? What you want to do with it makes a bit of difference too.
Not many semi-auto target rifles other than M1A's and their clones though.

The US Army Marksmanship Unit has shot rebuilt AR10's in 308 Win extremely accurate through 1000 yards setting records. No other semiautos has done as well other than M1, M14 or M1A's rebuilt to shoot 308 Win hand loads that well. They'll all test about MOA or better at 1000.

Something to be said for the AR platform for the Lego effect.

I have a PTR91 that runs like a champ and as accurate as you expect a battle riffle to be with FMJ.

One of my friends passed on
He left me 9 guns-one was a Win model 100-308 semi auto
deer rifle---I think it was made in the 70's
Very accurate with scope.
It does leave a small sharp cut on the brass--it hits something when ejecting.
As my hunting days are over the kids will get it

I have a Winchester Model 100 made in 1962. I bought it almost 2 years ago. It was practically brand new I'd say 98% condition. I had the firing pin recall done and starting shooting. Mine hated 150gr bullets so I tried 165's and voila it's MOA or better for 3 shots everytime I shoot it. Don't tell my rifle because everyone said it would be a 2MOA rifle on a good day.

To the OP for a .308 sized AR go for the .308 or the 6.5CM best options if your gonna shoot factory ammo.

Plenty of semi-auto rifles are capable of shooting as accurately as a match M1A. Many stock HK91s will do it, as well as Browning BAR, AR10, FN, the old Sigs, etc.

I agree if the M1A is a standard commercial match version; they are 2 MOA rifles at 600 yards.

Rebuild one with the best barrel and parts fit and it'll shoot good commercial match or hand loads all inside 4" at 600 yards. Anyone seen an HK91, BAR, FN or any other commercial stock semiautos other than an AR10 do that?

An HK91 will do 1-2 MOA, often closer to 1 MOA with good ammo. Mine will. I don't have numbers for the match versions - like the G3SG/1, SR9 or MSG90. But those are the kind of rifles that militaries use in preference to accurized M14s for designated marksman rifles. All the HK91s have free floated barrels, which help a lot.

And that's just the old HK. Your earlier statement makes it sound like the SIG AMT, HK 417, SR-25, BAR and other .308 rifles known for their accuracy don't exist.

Mine has no marks of any kind on the metal
The finish is gone where you hold the rifle
I can see a beautiful piece of wood under that beat up finish .
Got recall on firing pin done
Now you got me wondering--just loaded 100- 150 gr Speer flat nose, Was using 170 gr--time will tell

I have not any Bart

The accuracy of those European semiautos I've seen reported in print is about 1 MOA or more at a hundred yards. That doesn't mean they'll do that at 600. Groups get bigger in MOA as range increases and few people understand why. No test of any of these fine rifles for accuracy past 500 meters/yards has been put in print I can find.

I judge accuracy by where all shots go; not average ot mean radius numbers that don't tell the most any shot can miss point of aim. About one third of all shots go outside those numbers.

I have had a hk91 for years and while it is a great battle rifle the accuracy claims in this thread are not believable. Ar10s are more accurate. No way a stamped steel receiver design will be as accurate.

An AR style rifle in 6.5 CM with a 24 inch heavy barrel would be an ideal package.
Finding one made to order might be difficult.

It's easy enough to find complete uppers but they tend to have 20" or 22" barrels instead of 24". Slap it on a lower and off to the range.
I bet there are barrel makers that have 24" or longer for the creed it is getting popular. easy to change the barrel

...I need some more oomph.
What is the extra oomph needed for?
What is the intended use of the rifle?
What maximum range do you realistically expect to shoot?
Are you looking for a military style rifle that takes high capacity magazines?
What is your budget?

"The FNAR is supposed to be a pretty accurate .308."
It is. Likely the best non-AR semi-auto 308 out there in the ~1000$ range when it comes to accuracy.
