I just started loading up some federal cases w winchester primers w my rcbs hand primer and on about 1/3 or more of the cases the primers just would NOT go in. Most of the rest were fine but a few of the ones that did go in took so much pressure that they're a bit flattened. It looks somewhat like a flattened primer from overpressure but they haven't been fired, it's from all the pressure needed to seat them.

I'm wondering if it would be safe to shoot these rounds? I attempted to SLIGHTLY bevel the pockets with a razor knife and that somewhat helped but not much. I ordered an RCBS pocket uniformer. Do you think that would help? Really I'm wondering if these few slightly smushed primers will be safe to shoot.

Thanks

Depends on what you shoot them in.

NOT SAFE in a semi-auto as slam-fires might result.
Might be OK in a bolt gun, but why risk it?
Just deprime them, toss the ruined primers and start over again after you take care of the problem with the cases.

Your problem is, your cases have crimped primer pockets and you cannot reprime them without removing the crimp either by swaging or reaming.

Do a search here on THR for "crimped primers" and you will get a wealth of info on tools & techniques for removing crimps.

Federal Am. Eagle Rifle cases are crimped??? I thought that was only military brass. Hell, I ruined so many I may just toss the rest and get some Lapua's or something...sheesh!

I don't know if they are or not.
But you can tell by looking at them.
If there is a ring around the primer pocket and you trimmed it out with a razor knife, it is a crimp.

If primers won't go in, that seems like the most likely reason.
