Washed out of Four-dollar Bayou. Now I'm... somewh
I just bought 200 rounds of Australian surp .308, and when I got it home and opened the case, realized that it's loaded on 5-round stripper clips. That's groovy, but it doesn't help me much with the Garand, which is the only rifle I have in .308. I really don't like the idea of unloading them to reload into enbank clips. So I guess I'm going to HAVE to get another rifle that will take the clips.

So, my question is, What rifle(s) are these clips designed to work in? I hope it's something I can buy in Cal.

If Austraulian, I'd guess some variant of the FAL, yes?

If so, I'd expect there to be some kinda loading tool in there to charge the mags with, as the FAL to the best of my knowledge doesn't take stripper clips directly.

The strippers were intended for the Aussie L1A1 (SLR?)

You can use the strippers on a FAL if you have one of these top covers:

Or you can load the magazines with one of these speed loaders:

Actually, the Canadian C1A1 had an open (front half) top cover with a stripper clip guide in the leading edge and could be loaded directly with stripper clips. The Brit and Aussie L1A1's were closed except for the ejection port.

TAPCO is now offering a top cover with a stripper guide built in.

The clips will work fine in Mausers and '03 Springfields chambered in .308 or .30-06 (or anything else with a similarly sized case head). If you get a scout-type rifle in one of those calibers, you could get a clip guide machined into the receiver and use the there too. And for kicks, you could probably also use them with a .45 Shansei Broomhandle Mauser. :)

Howdy
M14/M1A strippers will also work well in the Indian 2A1 Enfield rifle. The 2A1 was replaced by the FAL? I believe, so the strippers should work in a lot of different rifles and mag loaders.

re FAL and stripper clip compatible dustcovers...

well ain't that a wonderment! Cool!

(shut up, you're gonna make me want one.. :p)

so out of curiosity (not to hijack your thread or anything Malone.. :) )...
what's more desirable in a military pattern rifle -- an open topped action like that, or a solid rail extending the length of the upper/forearm?

I'd think the former, as it would allow better access to the action in the event of a stoppage, and there's still plenty of room to mount your high tech toys on the rest of the rail... or no?

I've got the Tapco top cover in the pic I posted above (pic of the rifle is in the battle rifle thread). I like it a lot, especially because as you said, it allows clear access to the top of the mag and chamber area.

A good addition would be a rail across the top of the handguard and DSA sells one.

MLV:

You can and should own an M1A here in CA. At least get a receiver. You never know what they are going to ban next.

That ammo is some good stuff, from most reports. Let us know how it groups for you.

Hate to mess up your excuse for buying a new rifle ;) :D, but, if you already own a 700 Rem. or Mod. 70 Win. (maybe others by now) in .308, you can purchase a clip slot adapter that "bolts on" using the rear scope mount screws. One of the following links should provide information on these adapters:

Thanks, all. I am, as always, absolutely staggered by the knowledge available here.

So much to choose from... well not really, since I'm in California. Good thing I really want an M1A.

hps1: My Rem 700 has a double-stack, 4-shot magazine. Do you mean the "BDL" model with the removable mag?

Malone -- did you move? For some reason I always thought you taught school up in the MidAtlantic or New England region? No?

And yeah, I imagine you can mill out a clip slot in the upper reciever of a Mini-30 to take stripper clips.. but I'm not certain that the .308 clips would accept 7.62x39 rounds.. prolly a better bet to fit the notch to SKS stripper clips (which hold 10 rounds instead of 5 anyway -- better for you. :) ).

(BTW... Mini 30 == 7.62x39 == Soviet Bloc "AK" round
M-14/M1A == 7.62x51 == .308 == NATO round
different animals entirely)

I'll have you know we west coast commies don't like to be mistaken for east coast commies by you bumpkins out there in flyover country.

I knew the Mini took the shorter cartridge, but didn't realize there was a difference at the rear end. I just shot my first sks yesterday, and they were loaded from strippers, so I didn't get a good look at the cartridges. Are they rimmed or something?

Hey, a Commie's a Commie. At least that's what my father-brother-boyfriend Maynard told me back of the barn..... :)

No, they're not rimmed.. but the 7.62x39 case is pretty sharply tapered -- which is why the AK mag has such a distinctive curve to it. I don't think those would fit well on an M14 clip.. not tried it though.

Anyone out there got both handy for an experiment?

Hmmm, I thought the 700 had a 5 round magazine. I had a 40XC which had the internal, double stack mag. and it held 5 rounds. The 40XC uses the 700 action w/some target modifications by Rem. custom shop. I have seen match shooters add a clip slot (adapter) to regular 700's but not sure if they had to alter the magazines to increase capy. to 5 rounds or not; at any rate these were not detachable magazines, but hte internal box magazine.
