.308 vs. 30.06 what are the differences?

From a laymans perspective, not a whole lot.. they both are quite effective at dropping deer at respectable hunting distances. They'll both put the same sized hole in a piece of paper.

From a technical users perspective, you're talking a whole different ball of wax. They're balistics are similar, in that they both use the same bullets... but powder charge and type, cartridge capacity, barrel length and twist rates play a lot of different things with each... I don't know for sure, but I bet it's a safe guess that the max bullet weight of the 30-06 is a bit higher than that of the .308...

If you're a reloader, you can load the '06 to '08 specs... but not vice-verse...

YMMV...

If you fired 155 grain projectile with the muzzle velocity 2700 fps

Why so slow? The only people seriously interested in shooting a 155 grain .308 Win bullet at 1000 yards are Palma shooters who are limited in both chamber and bullet weight. They will typically use a 30" barrel and a heavy load for about 3000 fps.

I don't care if tis 50 mbg or .308 they bounce all the same

Schleprok62 - actually, I have safe load data for both calibers using 250 gr projectiles. What I don't have is load data for either with a heavier projectile (do they make a 250+gr .308 bullet?).

The 06 moving out at 2281 fps with a 250 gr pill, the .308 moving out at 2142 fps using a 250 gr pill.

There are plenty of people on the Hide shooting shorter barrels 22-26in and attaining 2900+fps with the 155 which will easily take you to 1k distance accurately. I don't know how fast you can move the 30'06 with the 155 but if you are using a shorter barrel, you arn't going to get it much faster then that. Bambi will in fact never know the diff. Most likely, anything hit with something moving that fast will never know that it was fired from a 308 or an '06.

It is the rifle action that limits the bullet weight. To fire anything heavier than 180, the bullet would be seated too deeply in a .308 case, encroaching on powder space and possibly even grasping the bullet at the ogive. .30-06 can accept 220 or even some 250 grain bullets without seating depth issues because the actions of the rifles are that much longer.

For normal hunting, there is no practical difference. If you intend to go after moose and large bears, the ability to use the 200 grain and heavier pills is a consideration.
