I have a rookie question. I am reloading 308 cartridges for my Stoner SR25. I am using once fired Winchester (in the SR25) brass. The Lyman handbook calls for a case length 2.015 and a cartridge length of 2.810. The brass I'm using measures 2.413 and the unfired Winchester Supreme 168 GR. Ballistic silver tip measures 3.190. Big difference!

The original ammo the brass came from (308 Win. 168GR. Ballistic tip) shot great in the Stoner SR 25. At 3.190 it is way out of spec by the Lyman 49th edition handbook. What do you all think?

Thanks, Trap

Wow that's a long round...

I'm no expert in any sense but.....

Is the 2.4" after FL resizing? Rifle rounds do need to be trimmed to size but your measurements seem very excessive.

Only other guess is make sure your caliper is zeroed.

Good Lu k I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in.

Also, what bullet is the Lyman calling for for that length?

No offense meant, but are you sure the calipers were zeroed when you made the measurements? Both measurements are bout .4" longer than expected.

No .308 case is 2.413", that's .30-06 length.

more to the point, are you sure they aint 30 06. size is about right,
308 trim to 2.005 max 2.015, overall length 2.810

I've noticed my digital ones, when the battery is low will read .200 for some reason.
