I bought some 180 grain .308 Hornady SST's, according to the Lee reloading book when I seat the bullet to the cannelure, it is way shorter than the Min OAL. Are these not made for use in a .308 Winchester cartridge?

Sorry I took so long.

From Hornady 8th Edition (most current):

308 Winchester

180 Grain SST # 30702

C.O.L. 2.740"

What powder are you using?

I show the following powders with a Federal 210 primer:

A2495

H4895

VARGET

IMR 4895

8208 XBR

IMR 4064

RL-15

VIHT N-150

2000 MR

WIN 760

Varget is a great choice. The following is the charges listed with Varget with fps per Hornady. Of course, use at your own risk!

308 Winchester
Hornady SST 180 Grain #30702
Federal 210 Primer
Hornady/Frontier Case
2.005" Case trim length
2.740" O.A.L
Varget Powder:

32.0 2000fps (MIN)

34.3 2100fps

36.5 2200fps

38.7 2300fps

41.0 2400fps

43.2 2500fps (MAX)

Hope this helps. This info is directly from the Hornady manual. Take care.

Don't sweat the cannelure location unless you are planning to apply a slight crimp.

What is your brass length?

I have loaded lots of the SSTs in 150g and 180. I shoot them out of an AR10 so they are seated to exactly 2.8 which is usually the cannelure. For the 180's I use CCI 200 primers in Lake City cases with either 42g Varger, 43g RE15, 46g of CFE or my new favorite 43g of XBR8208. All shoot well with no pressure signs.
