Any recommendation in terms of brand or style for a rifile?

Shot guns come in pump action, lever, and auto-loader. What does 308 rifle comes in beside bolt actions?

Also, please list the approximate price if possible.

Thank You

Can't tell if you are asking for rifle or ammunition brand recommendation.

Care to explain a little better?

You should also do a search on past postings.

If you are talking about rifles... M1A

I decided to go with the Springfield Armory scout model.

Throw in a 5 or 10 round magazine for hunting (deer and hogs for example) or throw in a 20 for general shooting/plinking.

It really depends on what you want to use it for.

Sorry guys for not being clear!

I am looking for a rifle for 308. Shot guns come in pump action, lever, and auto-loader. What does 308 rifle comes in beside bolt actions?

Throw in a 5 or 10 round clip

You mean stripper clips right? Clips go in the top, magazines go in the bottom. ;)

You can get a .308 in:

Bolt Action
Single Shot
Semi-Auto
Pump Action
Lever Action (I think Browning makes one, right?)
and Belt Fed if you're a real bad ass

Pretty much anything.

You got me mattw, I should have known better. Going to edit the original.

That pretty much covers the choices, now it comes down to how much you want to pay and what you want to use it for.

.308 is one of the most versatile rifle cartridges out there, and can be had in any action that centerfire rifles are available in. Everything from military pattern service rifles like the FAL, G3, M14/1A, AR-10, to lightweight traditional bolt-action hunting rifles available from everybody from Browning to Zastava. You can also get straight-pull actions, single shots, hunting-style autoloaders, inexpensive autoloading Saiga (commercial Kalashnikov variant) rifles, pump-action service-style-rifles (Remington 7600P), on and on and on. Leverguns are available from Browning, and depending on how much you want to spend, you can get a multi-thousands of dollars Accuracy International rifle that'll shoot to a thousand yards.

So, the best question is, then, what do you want to do with the rifle? What action do you think you'd prefer? We can go from there.

Hey thanks everyone.

I want it to eventually to be a hunting rifle but multi-purposes would be fine too.

So, how much is a round and which choice can hold most round and is legal in California? Also, what other rifle are out there that is close to 308? 30.06 right? I am going to the range to shoot a 30.06 later this week.

I have up to a 1k to spend.

The most you can legally have in California is ten rounds.

Most bolt-action rifles hold four in the magazine plus one in the chamber. "Hunting" semiautos will have a four round magazine, usually. The Springfield Armory M1A rifle, a version of which is California legal, has five and ten round detachable box magazines available. That would be my choice for a rifle if I lived in California.
