I'm really want to know what they would blame on deaths like these if guns were to be outlawed.

Two people stabbed in a home invasion!?
I don't have any guns in my house, and that could never happen (while I'm here and awake, anyway)!
That should make the lightbulb go on in their heads that citizens need weapons. Of course, it won't.

Wouldn't a better option be to outlaw knives and other pointy things? It worked out great for Great Britain!

how amazing that in a state that bans concealed carry, gun violence is so low...

CHICAGO (WLS) -- By ABC 7 News' count, there have now been 31 people shot in Chicago since Friday. Six people have died.

A 12-year-old and a 14-year-old were among those wounded. Authorities say the boys were shot about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 5300 block of West Madison. One of them was hurt critically.

As crews were responding to that shooting, a third person was shot, just around the corner. And just 40 minutes earlier, three men were shot, less than a block away.

Sunday afternoon, police superintendent Jody Weis again called for more common sense gun legislation to combat the problem. Police tried to put the numbers in context Sunday and also talk a little bit about the measures they are taking to try and stem the gun violence in Chicago.

The victims of the weekend's gun violence range in age from 12 - 65. Police say they include innocents and gang members alike. Of the more than 26 injured since midnight Thursday, six have died, including 34-year-old Marcus Hendricks and 65-year-old Ricardo Sanchez.

"It is very alarming. I just got back from out of town and to hear that number over a weekend, and summer has not hit yet, so we can just imagine what the summer is going to look like," said Dr. Sharon Latiker, private school superintendent.

Chicago Police Department Superintendent Jody Weis responded to the numbers and put them in context compared to the same weekend the previous two years. They are, in fact, pretty similar.

"In 2007 during the same weekend period there 19 shootings. Four of them resulted in homicides. In 2006 during the same weekend period in April there were 21 shooting," said Weis.

To get an even better perspective on the gun violence in Chicago, we've taken a look at the number of homicides citywide, most of which are gun related. Put into context, it is true that the number of murders has declined significantly over the last 10 years, from a total of 761 in 1997 to 443 in 2007.

However, compared to the nation's two largest cities, Chicago doesn't fare too well. New York had 496 murders in 2007. Los Angeles had 349. Both L.A. and New York have significantly larger populations. So, proportionally speaking, Chicago has a homicide rate 3 times higher than New York and nearly 70 percent higher than L.A.

"You just have too many guns and too many gangs and too much drugs on the street," said Weis. "I don't really like to compare different cities because we can find different ones that will have a greater murder rate per capita than Chicago has. I think we need to just focus on Chicago and do whatever we can to take the weapons off the street."

Weis also said that the police department is taking certain steps to accelerate they usually reserve for the summer months to combat crimes. Some of those measures include adding more officers onto the street and redistributing their strength to areas that are particularly high in gun violence.

but hand guns are baned...

sounds like a gang war is starting.

At least one person was shot with an AK-47, of which even semi-automatic clones have been purged from Cook County.

Yay for gun control!

Don't you know it's the surrounding states with their lax gun laws causing the problem.

Gator, I just moved out of Cook County, and I can tell you that I don't know of a single gun shop (or range for that matter) that still has anything "scary looking" even for rent. In fact, at the place I like to shoot (which sadly is the only place with Friday shooting specials since Gun World was forced to move because of the more or less unauthorized O'Hare expansion into Bensonville) even mention of these "assault weapons" will turn the store owner's faces white while they deny all knowledge that such things exist. Maybe the places you're going to are right outside Cook? Or maybe the place I've been going to is just really, really terrible. I really hate it, but I don't know where else to go for some nice, low priced trigger time. Anyway, I do know of several FFLs that work out of Cook that are refusing to touch anything that was supposedly banned, so there is something to that. I just thank God that I moved out when I did...Du Page ftw!!

So more people have been killed by gunfire in Chicago, where you can't carry a gun, than the number of people killed by gunfire in North Dakota in an entire year where almost everybody has guns.

THAT'S UNPOSSIBLE.

Zangetsu, find a new shop! ;) Which one are you talking about? I regularly hit Midwest, Village, Jerry's, and Suburban, they all sell evil black rifles. :)

Instead of trying to remove guns even further...try removing the clowns (gangs) abusing them!

Here's the thing about that; chances are it's more dangerous and more costly to take the guns away from the people who are actually dangerous, so instead they opt to take them away from people who only use them for recreation and defense. The public in turn sees the increase in gun control and assumes that the government is trying it's best to make the streets safer (because pictures of a table piled full of legal firearms that have been turned over peacefully makes for better photo ops than jail cells full of violent criminals (don't even get me started on prison overcrowding..)), and in turn is happy enough with their action to reelect them for another term. Since more guns are gone, more crime results, and we have a nice little vicious circle that's been around for years and is showing no signs of cooling it any time soon. Only way to break the cycle is a bunch of surprise arrests of people near the top (including Dailey and the governor) that takes them and their whole entourage to court (and maybe to jail), resulting in a sickening amount of media coverage that makes people so sick of them and everything they stand for that people would vote for a horse before ever wanting to see anything that reminds them even remotely of the word, "Stroger." The system is broke and people don't care. :fire: Makes me glad I got out when I did.

Gator:
Midwest was the one I was talking about! Love the $8 Fridays, hate pretty much everything else about it. First, they only let you shoot total metal jacketed rounds, which they don't hesitate in selling at 3 times the price of the FMJ variety. :fire::fire::fire: I don't care about that so much since I mostly shoot reloads which all happen to be TMJ. Second, when I went in there and told them that my rounds were TMJ, they wanted to pull one to be sure. I thought this was reasonable, and agreed, but when I asked that they do me the courtesy of replacing the bullet they destroyed, the guy rudely refused, saying that it was my fault for not marking my ammo properly, when (a)I buy my reloads from someone who I know who does excellent work but happens to consider FMJ and TMJ to be the same thing (b)I told him what the deal was regarding my equipment, and I was a little insulted that he was willing to believe a torn up, worn out, smudged sticker on my ammo box that said "230gr FMJ" instead of the owner of those products. :fire::fire::fire: I mean really, if I was going to try and cheat their system, don't you think I'd be smart enough to at least falsely label the ammo? :banghead: Anyway, third on the list is those God damn dogs upstairs that bark at everything. At first it's kinda fun to watch them chase a laser site around, but God forbid you actually try and get a feel for the thing without them biting the plastic pistol it's mounted on. Fourth is the guy who I think is the owner of the dogs. While not a bad guy, but he's completely clueless about everything black rifle related. Every time I asked him something his reply was, and I kid you not, "I don't know, that's illegal in Cook County." So that means you can't read up on it? Aren't you at least a little bit interested in firearms? I mean, you work here, and you can't tell me a damn thing about a last round bolt hold open modification for a Saiga? Twist rates for .223 rifles? Anything about an AUG or the US AUG clones? All that dude knew about Saigas in general was that he couldn't sell them, and the same went for everything else. Also, I don't recall them selling any black rifles either, but it's been a while since I've been upstairs because I didn't want to listen to endless barking while trying to look for stuff. Lastly, they never have any Glock 20 or 29's, which is understandable, but they don't have to be so coy about it :fire::fire: Overall, my experience in that place has been piss poor...but I'll still shoot there because the price is right. I'll have to try out those other places you mentioned...

I wonder how she appears to be more intelligent than the police chief and this violence personally affected her.

She isn't up for reelection.

What's truly funny one of the victims grandmother spoke on cbs and said gun control wont work. Her grandson was killed and she says parents need to take responsibility for their kids and more laws wont help. I was actually suprised by this but I respect and agree with her opinion.

And yet the police commissioner says more gun laws are needed.

All we ever needed was ONE law that says not to kill people. All the rest are nothing but nonsense for politicians to talk about when they want to get elected. And shame on the people that are dumb enough to vote for them.

And the police blame it on the warmer weather. How about blaming it on the thug's who have cart blanc powert over the law abiding citizens who have no means to protect themselves.

Maybe next they will blame the full moon, or the gravitational pull of the sun. Nobody in power wants to talk about the truth.

It is really scary where this country is heading.

Yeah, like some pens and pencils that many journalists use to put gun related lies on paper for our reading enjoyment.:banghead:

No, Apartheid Chicago is a human decency free zone.

Most racist and anti-Semitic city in North America.

Most corrupt city in North America.

Most ineptly run city in North America.

Most corrupt, violent and incompetent police force in North America.

It's Rhodesia with Homer Simpson calling the shots.

Anybody who's SURPRISED at what happens there has an IQ smaller than Kate Moss's dress size.
