.32 S&W Long Effectiveness

And the military dropping the 45 for a 9mm? I don't know about that one either. If you are going to use a FMJ bullet I would much prefer the bigger diameter and double the weight. But I guess politics plays as much in gun decisions as logic does.
We may think of "double the weight" in terms of terminal ballistics, but there is also an impact on logistics. There was the issue of NATO interoperability, and there was an awful lot of real WWII experience.

I understand that the 9 is better at penetrating a helmet.

When the change occurred, no one I knew who was in the Army liked the idea.

Thomas,

My agency just switched to the 9m.m. and I am fine with it. I think the main reason for switching was getting people to qualify, especially on the first try (the ammo shortage effects everyone).
Also, when we first went to the .40 S&W, we used a really hot load and had to replace all our BERETTA 96's after about 10 years. The new guns, H&K P-2000's were much smaller, about GLOCK 19 and 26 size, so the complaints about the BERETTA being too big went away, but qualifying was not easy. We down-stepped twice, going to a lighter bullet at the same velocity and then the 180 grain FEDERAL HST, which gives very good performance without all the noise, flash and recoil. However, high performance ammo, like HST was not available when we went to the .40 S&W, so we did it the old fashion way. We lightened the bullet and kicked up the velocity.

Still, a 9m.m. has less kick and recoil effects how easy a gun is too shoot.
Off duty, I shoot both 9 and 40 and have guns in both calibers. Every once in a while, I will go out and shoot our original hot load, a 155 grain bullet at 1200 fps and be reminded of how much easier it is too get a smaller, tighter group with a 9m.m., even though the 9 is a smaller gun.

On another post, I stated my opinion that agencies care more about getting EXPENSIVELY TRAINED PERSONAL to pass a qualification, than stopping power. It is easy to understand from that perspective. The .40 S&W, like any other caliber with more recoil than a 9m.m. will have the same qualifying problem as any more powerful round than the .38 Special, like the .357 magnum.

I think the 9m.m., like the .38 Special, strike a balance of recoil, gun weight and size that appeals to a very broad group of shooters and even non shooters who have decided to own a gun for self defense.

Good post Golden. I knew the 9mm choice was based on better shooting results. My BIL just got his LE ticket and at first he was issued a 40 and then shortly after that a Glock gen5 9mm. he loves it. He says its so much easier for him to shoot and shoot accurately. And by the way that was one of the reasons TR choose the 32 Long for the NYPD was because the light recoil and superb accuracy of the round. Stopping power while I am sure was discussed it wasn't the issue then like it is today.

And like you I really like my model 15. My uncle got it for me when the cops on the Ft Worth PD were switching guns and turning in their revolvers. Its in top of my closet loaded with Remington 158gr SWCHP loads given to me by a parole officer. Its my HD gun of choice over all the other guns I own.

And I was just getting in to guns in the early 1980s when the 9mm was all the rage and all the gunzines talked about. I thought it was a decent round. I have always liked the 9mm but then I like all rounds. They all interest me. And I am on the Notify Me list at Aim Surplus in case some more of the Glock 22s become available I will get on of those to go with my brand new, unfired Glock 17 Gen3 I bought about 6 months ago. Now that its drying up I hope to make it to my buds land and do a little shooting.

Yes but when you are facing guys like this you need all the penetration you can get. I am pretty sure thats a Ballistic Life Preserver. :D:rofl::neener:

Wow! Six pages on the 32 S&W. I never would have guessed. Bored maybe? Anyway, I have a 32 ACP Ortgies that I like, so why not a 32 S&W.

Keep the spirit of HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON alive and well. Buy a .32 S&W Long. I like the model 732.
