Can somebody recommend a starting load of IMR 800-X for a 79gr cast bullet in 32 S&W Long cases. I'll be shooting these out of a 327 Federal revolver.
Thanks

800-X is at it's best in high pressure magnum type calibers & loads.
I don't think it would be all suitable for use with reduced lead bullet loads.
Neither IMR or Hodgdon lists any data for it in the .32 S&W.
That should be what we call a clue.

Lyman #49 does show it's use in the .32 H&R Magnum case with 75 grain lead bullets.
Starting load is 4.9 grains for 1,113 FPS.
MAX is 5.5 for 1,227 FPS.

I think 700-x is a more approiate burn rate for use in .32 S&W L cases.

I've got 800-X and Universal on hand. I tried Universal before (a Hodgdon recommended load) and there were unburned flakes in the barrel and cylinders. Safe starting load for 800-X? Thanks.

You will most likely have the same trouble with 800X. On top of that 800X meters like corn flakes, which is not a good feature for small charges in low pressure cartridges.

IMHO Universal is more suited than 800X, but still not a very good chice loading to .32 Long pressures.

I would recommend buying a more appropriate powder. Bullseye, AA #2, WST, etc.

I have been having good success using Trail Boss with the lead loads in 32 H&R long and would probably work well in the S&W also. I found a lot of load data on stevespages.com for the 32 long.

I have lots o fluck with Trail Boss with this cartridge and cast bullets. May I suggest using a Lee Dipper if you are going to use this powder.

Sounds like he is wanting to hot rod it. If so, all bets are off. Pray they never get in an old .32 S&W Long revolver instead of a .32 Mag or .327 Federal.

You caught me. My plan IS to "hot rod" with 32 long cases and cast bullets in a 327revolver. :banghead: I realize there are better powders but I don't have any of them on hand and the LGS is an hour away. I'll get some bullseye when time allows. Thanks to those who answered my question.

I guess you are having trouble getting .327 cases then. Have patience, get the appropriate case, and then see how much really slow powder you can cram into them.

Then let me know where not to be when you test them. :D

I have 6 .327 cases if it will help.

32 H&R magnum cases are between the 32 long and the 327 M size wise and are what I use for mine with light loads. The brass is available at a reasonable cost also.
