.327 Federal Magnum

somebody might buy one if they make a 6 or 7 shot model j.

6-shot Model 60

I would jump on a 3" adjustable sighted, Model 60. But I have always been a fan of the original caliber anyway. The only thing I ever wanted was the weight and velocity increases that the .327 is now delivering. I cannot think of a better all-around fun-gun for the whole family, that can double as a serious fighting tool.

I'll buy the Ruger SP101 as soon as I see one...I definitely want one and it will give the the excuse to get that Lee Turret...I also need to get into reloading. If S&W made a light version (something like a five shot 642) I'd but it tomorrow...lock or no lock. The .327 mag has got to be superior to the .38 special in every aspect. Anybody care to argue that last point? If so...please educate me.

Gun show is coming back to town next month and here's hoping they have one, I plan on picking one up.

Always wanted an SP-101, and considering this will be a gun range/nightstand gun, the ability to shoot .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Mag as well as .327 Fed Mag looks very attractive. I'm not concerned about the exact ballistics, just looks for something fun to shoot.

I might buy one in a blackhawk or gp but dont have much practical use for a ccw snub in a varmit round.

I plan on one. The rounds ballistics intrigue me. Being a six instead of 5 shot intriuges me.

The fact that I acquired about 400 rounds each of 32 S&W and 32 S&W long a while back means I need one anyway.:D

You know I saw a couple marlin lever actions in 32 H&R the other day...........

It would be interesting to convert the .32 H&R Marlin lever action rifles to .327 mag. If the extra length did not create a loading problem. I would be curious how much muzzle velocity it gains with a rifle barrel. And it would still shoot what it shot before.

I've got the Marlin in .32H&R and it's a lot of fun. I tend to get about 200fps increase in the carbine barrel compared to my 5.5" Single Sixes. I imagine the .327 will increase about the same. I'm looking forward to a new .32 round, I hope Marlington will put it in a levergun for us.

I'm not going to rush out and buy one. I already have more shooters than I can shoot. But, when the SP101 comes out in 327 Fed Mag, I'm going to take a hard look at the gun again. I have previously dismissed buying an SP101 in 22 because of the trigger and in other calibers because I don't want to carry it (too heavy for my tastes) and have shooters already in 357 etc. But I do NOT have a 32 H&R and this might be my pathway to get one. I still will not carry it (as in CCW), but it might make a handy woods gun or truck gun that I'm not afraid to see some dirt and abuse.

.327 is .312 diameter, .30 carbine is .308 diameter. Why not just chamber it for .30 Carbine?

Well, for one the .30 carbine is rimless and using moonclips is kind of a pain, two, you couldn't fire .32 S&W longs, .32 h&r magnums and .32 shorts out of a .30 carbine gun.

I have the sp101 in .327 fed and find it to be a great gun. The frame size, barrel length and weight of the sp101 is about perfect for the cartridge, one of those times that the gun and cartridge are in balance, kind of like a 4" barreled .357 magnum. I have changed the grip of the gun to a pachmayr compac grip, which I feel is just a better all around grip than the stock Rugers and it makes the gun more comfortable. I find the round to be much easier to shoot out of the ruger than .357mag (I have a 3" barreled .357mag too), especially when I shoot rather quickly.

To go head to head - I offer the following observations, as a for instance.

Speer's excellent 135 gr. Gold Dot for short barrels is kind of the new standard for .38 snubbies, so I'll stick to that one for comparison. It gives the required 12" of gelatin pernetration that the FBI sets out.

So does the new .327 Federal from a 3" barrel.

Federal loads their heaviest .32 cal bullet (115gr.) to 1300 fps.

Both of these rounds do the job to 12" (many agree that this is ideal). Let's use those most common of self defense rounds for a standard for our comparison.

By all accounts the .327 is louder in decibles than all .38 spl. It approaches the decible level of .357 mags. It matches the decibles of the lower recoiling .357's such as Speer Short Barrel and Remington Golden Sabre.

The .327 requires a 3" barrel such as the longer Ruger SP101 to perform properly. .38 spl. often uses 1 7/8" barrels.

Using equal barrel length of 3", I went to a recoil calculator for some figures.

http://www.handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp

I plugged in a 115gr. .327 at 1300 fps from a 3" barrel.
I have clocked the Speer round at 950fps from a 3" barrel - so I used that.

I used a 1.5 pound gun as typified by the Ruger SP101

The recoil results were:

Free recoil for .327 in foot pounds = 4.72
Free recoil for .38+p in foot pounds = 3.47

Recoil Impulse for .327 in pound sec. = .66
Recoil Impulse for .38+p in pound sec. = .57

So - we have two guns that will perform up to FBI standards.

We have one gun that is louder than the other. (Most agree that the subjective recoil of a louder gun is greater than one of lesser report.)

We have one gun that requires a 1" longer barrel than the other to perform properly.

And - we have one gun that has considerably more recoil than the other.

Laying aside final mushroom size for now - how is this first gun with a .32 size wound chanel superior to the second gun with a .357 size wound chanel?

Is there any on on the forum who would rather be stabbed to a depth of 12" with a slow moving broom handle rather than a fast moving ice pick?

Please educate me!

I'd personally like a 5-shot .327 Federal Mag Centennial snub from S&W (without a lock ).

That'd be an H-Frame, I guess... I just read something about an I-Frame from back in the day. Maybe that's the "non-Magnum length J-frame"?

Be cautious about buying a 101 in .327. Ruger has had problems with faulty cylinders in many of them and are not guaranteeing a quick fix. this is documented in threads on the Ruger forum. Personally, I would love to have a .327 with a 5 to 8 inch barrel and adjustable sights.
