Why No New SP101 3" inch .327 Federal?

I really like my Ruger LCR in 327. It has a great double action trigger but if they ever make an LCRx with the 3" barrel, I'll probably buy one.......or two.

I think the 3" SP101 in 327 is going to be shot more with 32 H&R than 327 Federal. The 4" seemed like a good idea to get more of the cartridge's potential with a longer barrel. For a couple reasons the 327 Federal, like any of the other high pressure "magnums", is not a great choice for self defense without hearing protection. I have shot 32 H&R indoors without hearing protection and wasn't particularly stunned by it. I like it better than 38 Special because it is a six shooter, and I am not a policeman, likely to get in a gunfight at some point. It's way better than the one I left at home. I don't carry in my pocket, so the SP101 size gun is about right for me. My 327s are range guns or would be a choice for a walkabout gun in the wild, assuming I was also carrying a rifle. I could use 32 SWL or light reloads off my belt for plinkers, the real deal when holstered.

I think the idea behind the 4.2 inch .327 was to make it viable to possibly sell in Canada, but they have some law up there about .32 caliber pistols being banned, but I think that only applies to semi autos and not revolvers. Not sure why anyone in Canada would get a .32 revolver in Canada over a .357 because there are some big creatures up there that can do a man some harm and the extra punch of .357 would be more better.

4 inch does work for .327 quite well, but 3 inch is no slouch either. I prefer 4 inches myself tho, better and easier to see sights, sight radius, velocity, and maybe lower noise and flash.

BTW, Ruger also announce three new GP-100's in 327 Federal.

A 5", half lug blue model.

And 4" and 6" stainless double lugged models.

I have a LCR 327 and figure my next will be probably one of the GPs or perhaps Single 7's

Well lookey here, someone revived an old post I put up a while back! Looks like Ruger liked my suggestion to bring back the 3" SP101 in .327 Federal. I had no idea I had so much sway with Ruger. Don't thank me yet, I'm still working on getting them to bring back the Six series.

I think the 4" half lug like the Match Champion comes close enough. They could, if they haven't already, do a plainer version.

The GP is larger than the Six Series, enough so it makes the GP harder to conceal than a Six Series in a warm climate. Sometimes I want to carry 6 rounds of .357 instead of 5 rounds.

I wonder if you have actually tried that, since the Single Seven is not a small gun, and the grip type is far better suited to open carry. The GP conceals more realistically with the compact Lett style grip, but my 3" GP100 in a custom 41 Special has a rosewood Eagle that I bobbed in my shop.

Thanks anyway - My new 3" SP in .327 is a winner! Be sure & tell Ruger to make the new Speed Six in stainless with the 2.75" barrel and the original style wood stocks.

Nice that the safety billboard is no longer on the side of the barrel. It looks much nicer than my SP101 from years past.

I have a 1989 SP101 .38 Spl. 3" (first year of manufacture) that is loaded with .38 HP +P ammo. I like the 3" for muzzle heft as opposed to the 2". I have long fingers so the factory grips are not an option, therefore the Hogue Monogrip.

Mine has a Wolff spring kit in it and all of the sharp internal edges have been taken off, except for the hammer/sear interface. It is as smooth as a hot knife through butter compared to the factory rendition.

I use it as a HD backup to my 7-shot 1911 .45 (with extra mags, of course, but those are only for when the SHTF situations).

If you can hit your target (center of mass), 5-shots should get the job done. If not, you are in deep kimchee.

I see no reason for another shot with a smaller caliber. If you do, and are not comfortable, get a speedloader. I have one for mine.

Just my $.02 worth.

Jim
