Hello folks,

I have started loading for a .340 WBY that has been sitting in the gun safe for 9 years. I have a couple of question that I hope some of the guru’s here may know the answer.

1, I was in the process of prepping new Norma .340 brass. I uniform the primer pockects on all new cases during the first loading. My Lyman flash hole uniformer would not fit or drop into the flash hole. This is the same uniform tool that I use on .338 WM, 30/06, 45-70 etc. In fact it appeared that in process of uniforming the flash hole I would be opening it up a considerable amount. I called Weatherby and they were zero help:banghead:. Have others seen the same issue? Is the Weatherby flash hole smaller than normal?

2, Most loads call out the Fed. 215 primers. Well to make a long story short, I could not find any around South Eastern Arizona. I used CCI-250’s under 83 grs of RL-19 and a 225 Hornady Spire Point, 2828 fps average for 10 shot string chrono’ed. Has anyone compared the results of the Fed 215s vs. other large rifle and large rifle magnum primers?

I had great results with the above load, several groups went well under an 1” with 4 holes at .5”. Rifle is a Ed Brown with a 24 inch bbl.Over all I was very satisfied, but between the flash hole size and the primers I was left with several questions that I could not find the answer to.

Thanks,

Steve

I think Norma used 1.5mm (.059") drilled flash holes in some calibers.
We use 1/16" punched holes (.0625").
So, flash holes anywhere from .059"-.063" are "normal".

If your de-priming pin doesn't get stuck in the holes I wouldn't mess with them.

If it does, drill them out with your Lyman tool, or a #53, or 1/16" drill bit.

Thanks for the reply, the de capping pin passes just fine, so I did not touch the flash holes.

Thanks,

Steve
