i used to have a winchester 30-30 leveraction when i got my 35 rem pump i got rid of the 30-30

later i got a marlin leveraction 30-30 dont have that anymore either but i still have the 35

i really like the 35 remington although id be willing to give the 30-30 another shot if i found a pump

Lord, yall's helpful alright! Where I'm gonna be huntin has some prairie but a whole lot of it's trees, just in case that helps any. I need the one thats best for that kind of place first... Like I said, I'll get 'em both eventually but I caint afford both right now.

Hi-Jacking .30/30 prowess seemed child's play

What range is a .30/30 ineffective at? Get a proper recoil pad installed, and let's start again . . . My buddy's plastic butt-plate put black-and-blue marks on his shoulder with his .30/30 and rendered him incapable of shooting the following WEEK! Somehow I endured through thirty rounds; however, it took five rounds to get the recoil beast properly zeroed @ 100. It's a dependable 100 yard deer rifle at best. Squishy bullet tips are a sad attempt to make it anymore than it truly is. cliffy

FYI in case you didn't get the memo this thread is about 30-30 and 35rem. Nobody asked about or cares bout your 243win. Wanna pontificate bout it start your own thread and quit hijacking this one.

Oh, thank you and +1 a thousand times!!!! This winnie-puke drivel is way old.

A vote for the .35, though everyone should have one of each!

Cliffy how old are you? I'm guessing 14

OMG we're talkin bout a 30-30 hardly a bone breaker:rolleyes:. Maybe when you grow up you can handle the recoil of a real rifle.

A 150grn 170grn or 200grn bullet from a 30-30 or 35rem will kill any deer inside 200yds just as dead as 243 will. But really what does that matter to someone who shoots deer at less than 150yds?

Fifteen and still growing taller: 212 lbs but trying to lose baby fat

If'n ya'll had a modern .243 Winchester, these .30/30 questions would be moot and old-fashioned in notion: like 1900s wise. Use it if'n ya still got it, since anythin's better than nothin.' Just kidding guys, but I think I got ya'll going. The fat, but losen it, cliffy But never tell me a .30/30 don't kick yer ass.

LOL I shoot mag 12 and 10 gauge pump shotguns almost daily, so I think it'd take a hell of a gun for recoil to bug me! I dont know how much recoil them 30/30's got, but I bet it aint nothin compared to what I'm used to.

something to think about for all you naysayers

Shooting remington ammo, at 300yds which is a very extreme range for 30-30 and 35rem, both these rounds are still packing roughly the same amount of energy as a 240grn HP at the muzzle of a 44magnum handgun

agreed, 30-30 is a lot of things. Hard recoiling isn't one of them. My 30-30 fells like....well... a 243 compared to 250 grainers @ 2520 fps from my 35whelen.

The 35rem does kick a tad more than 30-30 but again it's hardly anything to cry about.

a 243 shooting 100grainers in a 7,5lb gun should have about 8.8ft lbs of recoil energy

the same weight 30-30 about 11

35rem 13.5

a 35whelen 22.6 ft lbs in an 8lb gun

416 rigby in a 10lb gun 58.1OUCH!

I'll have to admit that my Winnie with a metal butt plate seems to sock it to me just as much as my 30-06 when I'm zeroing them in. The 30-30 doesn't have much weight to help with the recoil. The metal butt plate doesn't help either. But both are manageable. Unlike a .300 or 7mm. The 30-30 just suprises me when sighting it in. My heavier Marlin, WITH a pad doesn't make me blink.

Your zeroing in problems are simply caused by sitting at the bench in a rigid position. Getting up on your hindlegs does a lot to ameliorate the recoil. An add on buttpad will help those with physical shoulder problems or have have gotten recoil shy. No matter what, any gun shooting a 150 gr bullet good for a 100 yd kill is going to have some recoil. My brothers shoot 30-30's, both are considerably smaller than me and it doesn't bother them a bit. I have my 32 Win Spcl and it's equivalent to the 30-30 but with a 170 gr bullet, just a wee tiny bit bigger hole and bigger thump. The 35 is bigger yet but still not a barn burner. I would be happy with any of them and if you aren't a hand loader the 30-30 is always going to be easier to find. There isn't a single game animal that I can shoot with a 35 that I couldn't kill just as dead with a 30-30. Its all a matter of taste. It the .358 makes you happier than a .308 than have at it and enjoy but don't feel cheated just because you have a 30-30.

Thanks again for all yall's help, yall sure respond quick! I'm still open to suggestions though, the gun store aint open til thursday and right when I start favorin one, someone comes up with a great point about the other one LOL!

30-30 recoil problems? wow hard to respond and stay high road.

maybe the rifle didnt fit you properly. i know my mosin thumps me Hard almost as hard as my .338 win mag however the stock is very short for me and not comfortable to shoulder at all. my friend who is about 10" shorter than i am shoots it without much trouble. im not shooting it anymore till i get the cash for an aftermarket stock thats longer.

you could have had a similar problem with your friends 30-30

anyway to the op. buy the .35 and use remington cor lokts in it. i dont think you will notice a big difference between grains as far as how hard it hits a whitetail and inside of 150yrds there shouldnt be a big diference between a cor lokt and a more top shelf round.
