35 Remington, .270, or 25-06

I am looking to get a rifle in the next week. I found a really mint used 35 Remington model with scope, a new Savage .270 with scope, or an absolutely beautiful 25-06 and the shop owner said he would give me the $250 scope for $200 and sight it in for me. I MIGHT go hunting this fall, with the emphasis on MIGHT. Until then I will be doing alot of target shooting. I like the feel of all three rifles. The 35 Remington is $325, the Savage .270 is $390, and the 25-06 is around $600, which is more than I want to spend. I am leaning towards the .270 because of the price and the feel of the gun. What do you guys think? Thanks.

I think the .270 is the most inexpensive way to go. The 35 Remington does not have a safety, which sort of bothers me a little. The scope on the .270 is a Simmons and it is real nice. The stock on the .270 is synthetic, but that does not bother me. I am open to other opinions though. Thanks.

while i am a giant fan of the 25.06 because it can shoot across the canyon, i believe that the 270 ammo is more varied and cheaper. Especially at Academy where it is 6 or 8 bucks a box, i think.

nh is dense, brushy stuff... the lack of a safety and the chambering makes me think the 35 rem is a marlin lever gun. especially if it is a marlin, then that is the way to go. lever action + hard hitting chambering = great hunting rifle.

so, that's the way i'd reccomend. while i like the 25-06 the most, neither the 270 or 25-06 can really stretch their legs in nh.

Legal beagles

Yep, since Marlin adopted some flea bitten legal beagles they put safeties on their lever guns. Seems just about everyone hates them. They were safe at half cock for about a century, so the beagles got to fixin' something that didn't need fixing.

+++ for the Marlin. Offer a bit less, and see what happens.

Yes it is a Marlin, and it is in very very good condition. The scope is very nice as well. The Marlin is only $325, I could probably get him to go to $300. The lever action is real cool, and I don't know many people that have lever action rifles. I am trading my Ruger 10/22 in as well. Tough choice for me because I only want 1 rifle in the house.

non-safety marlins are desireable for collectors and custom builds...

since it is a non-safety marlin, for me, that seals the deal. go w/ the marlin in 35 rem.

I just checked on Midway for ammo for the 35 remington and there ain't much of it. I will have to check some other sites, but the thought of owning a classic lever action rifle is pretty cool. The .270 seems cheaper, but when I had my 30-06 years ago a box of 20 lasted awhile!

Yep, on all counts. No really long shots around here except at a facility with a 300 yard range.

The 35 Rem is a fine brush gun, is very versatile, can go after many targets in a wooded environment. Much more practical.

Neverless, I wish I had a 25-06 to shoot.

I bought the Marlin in 35 Remington. The stock felt better and it was more comfortable on my shoulder. I will be picking it up on Monday and then it's off to the range. Range report will follow.

I got to wait now!! I got a hold/pending with the FBI? I guess longun checks are different? I bought a Ruger 10/22 2 weeks ago! I will probably get it on Monday.

Yeah, I know. Now that it is kind of warm I just want to go shooting everyday!! It has been at least 10 years since I have owned a rifle. It was a sportorized Eddystone and I sold it like an idiot:banghead: :banghead:. I am still kicking myself in the ass for that one!

MY 336RC in 35 Rem came with a hard plastic buttplate. With my bony shoulders, it could HURT me off the bench or shooting prone if I didn't snug up and place it just so.

Nothing that a PAST or a slip-on pad can't cure, but just a word of caution....

check out midway or brownells for pre-fit limbsaver or decelerators. the pre-fit pads don't fit perfectly, but are far easier than a grind-to-fit pad, and the average shooter will never notice the cosmetic difference, but will certainly note the comfort difference.

i always get put on delay, and it irritates me to no end (mostly because the 90 minute drive each way), but i guess the delay will give you an opportunity to get your accessories put together.

I just bought the Pach pre-fit for my 336RC and was VERY disappointed to note that it is not designed to use the factory stock's buttplate screw holes. It looks like Pach used an existing base and the holes didn't quite line up and yet aren't far enough apart to let you just drill new holes. To address this, the kit contains two little wallboard screw anchors and two cheezy little wood screws.

It's goofy.
