I have owned a Model 94 Winchester in .356 for over 10 years now and really like the caliber. I may just like Marlin rifles a little better, and since from time to time I get bit by a tinkering bug, started thinking about buying a 336 in .35 Remington and having it rechambered to .356. Has anyone here done that, or know about it? It would be a shooter, so I'm not interested in finding one of those .356 336s form the 80s with the giant price tags. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think it might be a little spicy for a 336 action.

Winchester only offered it in the beefed-up receiver "Big-Bore 94 Angle Eject", or whatever the name was.

Anyhow, it is rated by SAAMI as a 52,000 CUP cartridge, and that is more then the 336 can safely handle.

You might also run into bolt-face, extractor & feeding issues, because the .356 Win. has a slightly larger case head then the .35 Remington.

I thought about the same thing for a 30-30 to a 307. Then I found out Marlin had to heat treat the barrels for the 307 caliber guns they built. I'm sure you would run into the same thing with the 356 from 35 remington.

I think you would need a new barrel.

RCmodel the marlin can handle the pressures involved I replied to this very same reply from you last week outlining all the specs involved.

Actually it's a somewhat popular conversion to ream a 30-30 or 35rem marlin to 307/308 or 256/358 wildcats.

Not really much of a wildcat actually. In the case of the 30 caliber you simply ream out the 30-30 chamber with a 308 win reamer, use 308 cases and dies but use bullets and data for 307win. The same Idea applies to the 35cal version

SAAMI maximum pressure for the following cartridges is the SAME at 52,000 CUP:

.307 Win
.308 Win
.356 Win
.358 Win
.375 Win

the two rounds in bold have been factory chambered in the 336

the only difference was that the 307 rifles had different threads fitting the bbl to the receiver

I wonder if Winchester did any beefing up to go from the 30-30 to the 307/356/375 case?
Yes, they did.
Notice the large "lumps" at the rear of the "Big-Bore 94" action to strengthen the receiver at the locking bolt cuts.

A standard 94 is mostly flat all the way back.

Got to disagree with you there.

SAAMI for the .308 Win is 62,000, not 52,000.

The SAAMI 52,000 .308 spec is for the Remington Accelerator Sabot round only.
