Hello friends and neighbors // smee781 you are correct // My 6" barrel 586 won't fit in glove box or console // I removed excess from inside a plastic drill box. Put in some memory foam, got the smallest lock I thought the sheriff would allow. Asked the sheriff if I was carrying correctly the next time I saw him at the range. He said I was fine.// Perhaps the lock is unnecessary as the plastic drill box clips could be considered "Integral fastener" THANKS for the Tip! I'll ask sheriff next time I see him. I do keep revolver loaded, on seat beside me in plastic case, extra key on quick release ring and extra key in wallet.... Thanks for input.. content ( the term the sheriff used was three steps away and I respect his interpretacion as he is first responder here )

sohcgt2// I looked at them also but I like heft of stainless in shorter barrel revolvers (quicker back to target) and I think it would be easier to practice with.( might be wrong never had one)// Some of the "Other" catagory recommendations I wil rent over the next month // not stuck on one revolver yet // The only short barrels I use are Stoger Luger 22.lr 4" ,, Linead 410/45 single shot derringer (sold this one to partially fund purchase of new 3" revolver)....thanks content //;; Polled on revolvers I know I can get at reasonable price.

I voted other, because I have a Taurus 605 with a 3" barrel and love it. I like it better than any other 38/357 self defense revolver I have ever had except a Smith 65. I forget what I did with the extra money. Accurate and downright fun to shoot up to 20-25 yards with everything up to 145 grain Magnums. I should add I don't think any small revolver is much fun with anything hotter than that, but when I am carrying for self defense I wouldn't care. I generally load 125s for that anyway.
If you had a Smith 65 in 3" or 4" on the list I could have gone for that. I don't care for adjustable sights on self defense small revolvers. Lots of old Colts around and fixed sight 'J' frames too. The Ruger SP101 is a very good gun, but I would have to get a used one because I don't like the post-Lett grips, and can't see the price plus the cost for WOOD Hogues. I wouldn't have a new Smith with a lock, but that's just me.
There are tons of good used 13s/65s on the market, and since your primary is a 586, the grip is identical so adaptability ought to be real easy.

Hello friends and neighbors// After reading here I have my ffl dealer and friends looking for a used pre lock Ruger 3" SP101 / or used pre lock S&W 3" Model 65 / these both felt great /// Virginian, had one ( 65 ) in my hand almost when you posted lol great choice ( owner would not sell but I see why ) Might include Tauras 605 if no model 65's show up, won't be getting one till next month so plenty of range visits before then. // Thanks to everyone ...content

I also looked at J-frames but ultimately decided on the Ruger for price and weight. suprisingly (at least to me) it shoots better with hot .357 rounds than .38 special target ammo. It seems to be more accurate and it seems to recover between shoots more quickly. Good luck with your choice, all three are excellent IMO.

absolutly the sp101. i would try to find one with a 3" barrel though. a lot of people, myself included, agree that they just balance better.
