Hello friends and neighbors// I recently moved to S.C.// Without CCW, when traveling in car revolver must be 3 steps away locked. So I will be getting a CCW.// I am big guy 6'4", 250lb// Will carry S&W 586 6" 357/38 6shot as primary (just my choice many reasons) /

QUESTION: Which of these 4 options :
#1: Ruger sp101 2.5 inch, 5 shot, 357/38 ; Pros: easy to pocket, fits ankle holster.
Cons: 5 shot would not match speed loader for S&W 586;2.5 inch does not have full ejector rod; not as accurate as 3 inch for me.

#2: S&W 686P 3 inch, 7 shot 357/38 ; Pros: extra shot; 3 inch more accurate for me; can match grips on my S&W586 .
Cons:7 shot would not match seed loader for S&W 586; much larger clothing imprint ; no ankle option.

#3: S&W 686 2.5 inch 6 shot 357/38 Pros: will match speed loader for S&W 586, can match grips on S&W 586.
Cons: 2.5 inch not as accurate for me; much larger clothing imprint; no ankle option; 2.5 inch does not have full ejector rod.

#4:Other( lol might as well): Suggest another 357/38 ;3 inch; 6 shot
Any input is appreciated......thanks content

So you're looking for a back up gun considering the 586 will serve as a primary?

For a two gun carry the 686 is going to be too much, I think.

How about one of the S&W J frames? Some of 'em are really light, still chamber the .357 and can be concealed in a pocket, ankle holster, inside the belt...I've had my eye on a S&W 649 for this purpose.

Some other options I can think of (1) IF you can find one at a reasonable price a 6 shot Colt Magnum Carry .357 is small and offers 6 rounds (2) a Ruger Six Series with short barrel as the ejector rod throw is still long.

Thanks guys 3 more options // bear71, I tend to agree 686 too much weight and I do not have an airlight budget // Mcgunner, that is why it is #1 and I now know I can get sp101 in 3 inch// RugRev, I do like Ruger Six Series......Thanks to all ...content.

"I do not have an airlight budget"

Stainless would be the best route, some weight in a small piece.

Airlite + .357M = 0 fun, much pain.

Go with the Ruger, you don't need us to go with your heart.

The SP101 has no business in an ankle holster, IMHO. It's heavy enough that it will feel awkward and may even throw your gait off. It also won't work as a pocket gun, with the possible exception of a favorite pair of work pants or jeans. It's just too massive.

Have you considered the Ruger LCR? Very light & concealable; no external hammer to snag; nice (very nice!) trigger pull. Fellow on gunbroker - Kentucky Gun Company - has 'em for $419. shipped. Beats my LGS by a flat $100.

Just an idea - and, yes, I know you didn't ask about it, but it might need to be considered.

Q

Thanks Q for the suggestion GB does have a lot of LCR's for sale and good prices too.// Mainly prefer to have 357/38 option, even though plan is that backup will have 38sp loaded to lighten weight and recoil. Extra rounds (carried speed loader and glove box)will be 357 125jhp corbon( if I need um that bad I'll want some knock down) //bear71 I agree airweight w/357 = pain , stainless= less recoil = quicker return to target. ..... content

smith model 60 pro-series, If I knew how to post a picture of it, I would. I am a die hard Ruger fan (own stock in the company, so thanks to all you Ruger owners out their) but there is something about that model 60 I like. I want to handle the LCR before I go and take money away from me, but I really like that Smith.

just realized you said 6 shot, my bad. the pro series 60 is 5 shot, (I stilll want it.)

Ruger SP101 or a pre-lock S&W 3" Model 65 (which I actually carried today).

I will NEVER carry a S&W revolver with the ILS. My life means WAY too much to me.

kanook/// no problem, I'm easy. These are the 3 I've seen the most and are like my 586 in feel.// #4 Is so everyone can help me brainstorm.// In N.C. weapon loaded on seat beside you is ok so really did not need CCW.// S.C. weapon locked in glove box is no good.// No tellin, with this knowledge pool I may fall in love with something I've never heard of.// An experienced opinion is always welcome////Deanimator I agree ILS is not for me either, but with used revolvers approaching new revolver prices...thanks for input

The smith 649 is the ultimate cc gun... Just do this... go to your local gun shop and put one in your hand!!! it can be carried in your front pocket if you choose... to me it is the best.. can be loaded with 357 or 38 (i load it with 38+p). Although it only holds 5 shells... i figure i will not be in a fire fight with it... just have to ward off one bad guy... and its more than enough for that... if i'm worried about a fire fight.. i need a rifle anyway.

Dear content,

You may want to recheck the laws about gun carry in SC, it says no where about being locked in the car. Only that it needs to be in the center console or glove box. It can be hot and ready to go.

SECTION 16-23-20. Unlawful carrying of handgun; exceptions

(9) a person in a vehicle if the handgun is secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle; however, this item is not violated if the glove compartment, console, or trunk is opened in the presence of a law enforcement officer for the sole purpose of retrieving a driver’s license, registration, or proof of insurance;
