Don't know about best but I only have one handgun, a 4" 686-4 that I like a lot. For carry, I like a Bianchi Cyclone holster hung crossdraw. The barrel won't jam into the seat and up into your ribs when you set in a pickup and the grip is always in a handy position. If you are thinking used, I'd try to find a Security 6, they always felt better to me than a GP 100.

Not a big fan of the 357 Magnum cartridge in general but I own two. I use a S&W 627 8-shot 357 Mag with a 5-inch barrel for USPSA competition and it has served me well though it rarely gets used with 357 Mag as my competition ammunition is loaded in 38 Short Colt cases. If I was going to replace it right now I would go with a S&W 929, in 9mm Luger, same frame, same 8-shots but with thicker moonclips for the rimless cartridge. Moonclips rule!

I did not think about the 627 when I posted earlier. Glad you brought it up.

I have a 2.5" 686+, a 3" GP100 and a 2" SP101. I much prefer Ruger over S&W so I would go with the GP100. I prefer the 5" half lug model myself and if you can find one I recommend it. Also, consider the Kimber K6 if you want a shorter barrel.

I would forget the Colts at the moment. No reason to pay scalper prices for what amounts to an in-production collectible.

I know S&W has its fans and while there is nothing inherently wrong, I just feel the Ruger is a better made firearm.

I’ll add another vote for 686 4” . Bought mine used, like new this past December. Still getting used to it but can pick off cans at 25 yards with it in single action (I’m working on becoming a better shot). Accurate and fun to shoot. With a good holster you can forget you’re carrying it (kind of.). I carried It for the last half of deer season just to try it out. Loved it.

I think I'd prefer Ruger for field & stream too. SP101 or GP100 if you dart in and out of the woods alot. Redhawk if you spend most of your time there.

I have nothing against S&W. I just prefer Ruger for the woods, S&W for the street. Of course they overlap and there's no black & white here.

Personally I might opt for the longest SP101 I could get. Light but potent.

I just got an email from Grab-a-Gun that they have the S&W 327 TRR8 .357 Magnum in stock for $1360.00. That’s full MSRP, but it’s the first I have seen available in a long time.

I just bought a S&W model 25 Classic so I have no money for the TRR8. Murphy’s Law...
