I have a few hundred 125 JHPs that I'd like to load over near max charges of 296. I've read that these loads can damage revolver forcing cones. Are they also hard on .357 rifles?

I'd probably shoot all/most of them in my 1894 Marlin.

No, they will be fine in a rifle.

Different dynamics at work when the bullet jumps the cylinder gap in a revolver.

Also, the damage you are referring to when shooting a 125gr bullet was linked to a S&W K frame forcing cone. Like said above, no fears with a Carbine. (or a S&W L and N frame)

Load 'em up....I have a Colt King Cobra that has had 20k or so hotter 125's ran through it. It shows no wear at the cylinder gap.

The 125gr JHP's work great at pistol velocities but in a rifle or carbine the light weight 125gr JHP's will be pushing 2,100 fps +. While they may be fun to shoot at paper targets they will perform poorly on anything but light varmints do to poor penetration from fragmenting upon impact. If your intent is to shoot paper or to "blow up" prairie dogs or ground hogs then they will do the job. If you intend to hunt larger animals up to deer size then you will be better served with sturdier JSP like those manufactured by Hornady.

I know not all revolvers aren't created equal, but I have put hundreds, if not thousands of 125 gr. JHP 296 loads through my K frames and Ruger's for years without any signs of FC damage, so your carbine will be just fine.

Load 'em up and shoot 'em! IF they cause flame-cutting of the top-strap in your revolver so what...S&W provides a lifetime warranty.
